Robins Anniversary Special Shows Why DC NEEDS The Boy Wonder

DC Comics is celebrating the 80th anniversary of one of its most iconic legacy heroes in Robin 80th Anniversary Special. The special contains ten new stories about the various incarnations of Batman’s sidekick and each story illustrates why they are so important to not just Batman, but the DC Universe as a whole.

Directly or indirectly, the stories in Robin 80th Anniversary Special all show the Robins inspiring hope and purpose to those around them. The special’s ten tales, coming from an all-star team of writers and artists, take time to highlight the Robins in all their incarnations throughout the DC Universe. Every Robin from Dick Grayson to Damian Wayne is represented and though their stories are all quite different, they all show the Robins helping those around them.

In the story Team Building, Nightwing is contrasted with Titans villain Damien Dahrk. Dahrk leads his Hive minions through intimidation, while Nightwing leads the Titans by encouraging and respecting them. This all comes to a head when it is revealed that Dick infiltrated Dahrk’s forces without the villain even noticing. But Dick Grayson isn’t the only Robin who has time to shine in Robin 80th Anniversary Special. Jason Todd’s heartbreaking story reminds readers of Jason’s days before becoming Red Hood, and how much his brief tenure as Robin meant to Batman. Tim Drake’s two stories show his relationship with the other Robins and how they influenced him to create the Gotham Knights group. Even Stephanie Brown has a moment in the spotlight, despite her time as Robin being the briefest.

It is Damian Wayne’s first story which most clearly highlights the importance of Robin. Though Jonathan Kent is a relatively recent addition to the DC Universe, his friendship with Damian Wayne has become a defining feature of both characters. As Jonathan writes an essay about Damian in the story My Best Friend the reader is given a sense of the two’s friendship. Just knowing that Damian will always have his back is enough to make Superboy feel safe.

Robin 80th Anniversary Special is certain to remind comic readers why the character more than deserves their enduring legacy. Each Robin is different than the last and they all bring something different to the table. Though fans of Batman and Robin undoubtedly have a wide range of opinions about which Robin is the best or worst, all of them have earned their place in comic book history.
