A fan of the 1987 sci-fi classic Robocop has created a movie-accurate suit of the titular character. Robocop was directed by Paul Verhoeven, the filmmaker behind Starship Troopers, Total Recall, and the newly released Benedetta. The original film went on to spawn two sequels and a 2014 reboot of the same name, as well as several tv shows, comic books, and video games.

Robocop follows police officer Alex Murphy, who is murdered by criminals in a cyperpunk future-version of Detroit. He’s then revived as the titular Robocop by a mega-corporation, exacting a brutal campaign against the city’s underworld while grappling with what remains of his humanity. Despite being an action thriller, the movie explores larger themes of identity, corporate greed, and the nature of being human, which has contributed to its lasting reputation with genre fans.

Evidencing that enduring popularity, Instagram user just.ayaal reveals their Robocop design with a short video, showcasing the outfit and a prop gun. The video starts with a picture of the film’s hero on a monitor before panning over to the suit, and the creator then walks robotically around the room shooting bad guys – and eventually the camera operator. In a separate post, they show a picture of the individual pieces of the costume, showcasing the detail of the outfit.

The original Robocop starred Peter Weller and Nancy Allen, the former of which has cited it as the hardest movie he’s ever made, given the restrictions of the Robocop costume. Verhoeven also cited it as an incredibly difficult shoot, given the time-consuming and experimental effects, something the 2014 remake didn’t have to contend with given the advancement of CGI. Verhoeven has said, however, that the original was ahead of its time, and could not be improved with digital effects.

Robocop was also groundbreaking in its depiction of violence, using its extreme gore as a satirization of the dehumanizing effect of technology. This mirrored the film’s simultaneous satirization of corporate greed and the dehumanizing effect corporations have on the average citizen. As a result, the developing technology is seen as neither good nor evil, but as an inevitable development in human progress – but since the robots are owned by corporations, the police would effectively be privatized and owned by that same corporation. This layered satire, which is still relevant today, made the film unique in a way the 2014 film missed with its sanitized content. In the end, Robocop clearly still has an impact on culture today, and its deep themes juxtaposed with its intense violence make it something impactful and all its own.
