Rocket Leagues LimitedTime Game Modes Should Be Permanent Playlists

When most people think of Rocket League, they likely think of playing the two most popular Competitive playlists available: 2v2 and 3v3 Soccar (the name given to the game’s basic “car soccer” game modes). While 3v3 Standard is the main format for the game’s competitive eSports scene, some players find 2v2 Doubles more manageable. There’s even a nerve-wracking 1v1 Duel mode for the most confident of competitive players, who don’t want to rely on teammates at all. For plenty of players, though, Rocket League is just about having fun with friends and taking the game way less seriously.

For the more casual-oriented demographic of the game’s large player base (even larger since Rocket League moved to a free-to-play model in September 2020), the game has a lot more to offer in the form of the Extra Modes playlists. There, players can run their custom-designed vehicles up and down a basketball court in Hoops, knock around a giant hockey puck in Snow Day, bash each other with power-ups in Rumble, or play a futuristic keep-up-style game where players score through the floor in Dropshot. These four core Extra Modes options have remained the same, however, since 2017.

In order to give the player base plenty of ways to enjoy the game, Rocket League developer Psyonix has introduced regular in-game events, many of which have featured limited-time modes. This past February saw a collaboration with the NFL for a Super Bowl LV event and an American football twist to the game in the form of Gridiron, which pitted teams of four players against each other, carrying the football on the roof of their cars. Summer-themed events of the last two years have also included Beach Ball mode, which replaced the game’s normal ball with a giant, ultra-lightweight plastic ball and required a whole new level of finesse to score.

Why Rocket League Needs More Permanent Playlists

One of the most frequent and well-received limited-time modes that has rotated into the game periodically over the last year is Heatseeker, where each touch of the ball sends it automatically curving through the air on a collision course with the opposing net, picking up speed with each additional touch until a goal is scored. This mode created a unique strategy that took aiming shots out of the equation (a struggle for a lot of players) and relied heavily on smart positioning and aerial car control prowess. While Heatseeker has received considerable praise from the community, Psyonix still has yet to announce any plans to add it to the available ranked Extra Modes playlists, although they have gone as far as to make it available for private and custom Rocket League matches.

It’s possible that Psyonix doesn’t want to spread out the number of players online at any given time over too many different playlists, which might make them hesitant to add multiple new playlists to the game. A great solution could be to add a dedicated “experimental” playlist, which could have one of the previous limited-time modes stay put for a month at a time, before rotating to a new one. For Rocket League players both old and new, more ways to play would be beneficial to the game’s long-term success.
