Rocket Raccoon Mocks a Classic Marvel Cliché

Warning! Spoilers for Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #3

Guardian of the Galaxy member Rocket Raccoon calls out a classic Marvel cliché in the latest tie-in to the King in Black event. His quick wit averts a possible disaster when Monica Rambeau’s Captain Marvel crosses paths with Kang the Conqueror. The Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black issue is written by Peter David with pencils by Greg Land, inks by Jay Leisten, and colors by Frank D’Armata.

Taking place after the events of Secret Wars when Spider-Man first acquires his symbiote costume, Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #3 provides a backdrop for the current storyline. The event tie-in features time traveler supervillain Kang the Conqueror, who has recruited Rocket Raccoon and Spider-Man to complete his mission after having captured a shadow minion belonging to Mister E. They are able to separate the symbiote from its host, who is revealed to be Monica Rambeau, a previous Captain Marvel.

Immediately after Captain Marvel is relieved of the symbiote, Rocket Raccoon calls out a common trope when her first reaction is to attack Kang. In true Rocket fashion, he asks, “Why do you people always greet each other by launching into a fight?! Don’t any of you shake hands?!” For once, audience expectation is subverted, even though it would make complete sense for Captain Marvel to fight the legendary enemy of the Avengers. Instead, a truce is quickly established as circumstances aren’t as straightforward as normal. After their powers are showcased against each other for a brief moment, their mission carries on.

Usually, it’s a convenient opportunity for writers to incorporate fan service by featuring two heroes, or villains, in a showdown when they first meet each other. Although Monica Rambeau charges at Kang for a moment, Rocket’s quick wit allows the story to have its cake and eat it too, giving audiences a taste of a fight and acknowledging what is to be expected. The classic cliché referenced by Rocket calls back to just about every first team-up between heroes in Marvel’s history. From comics to movies, even the Avengers themselves have been quick to engage in battle before settling down and realizing they’re on the same side. It seems like writer Peter David is over the trope at this point, which has been criticized for being a lazy means to orchestrate iconic imagery. This was the case in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers when Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America fought each other.

Theoretically, such a fight as a result of the symbiote’s attachment to a superhero like Captain Marvel would have felt particularly cheap and repetitive to King in Black as a whole. It’s one thing for Monica to have a misunderstanding with Kang, but it’s another for a battle to break out because of an easily predictable situation. In a refreshing subversion of expectations, Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #3 remains one step ahead of the reader.
