Ron Weasley 5 Times He Was A Coward (& 5 Times He Was A Hero)

Ron Weasley is one of the most fascinating characters in the Harry Potter universe. He’s primarily used as the comic relief, as he’s typically seen stuffing his face, fighting with his brothers, or doing something stupid. He’s also by far the most cowardly member of the core trio, as he typically whimpers and scurries away whenever danger is present (at least in the earlier movies).

However, he also has braver moments. At least once every movie, Ron displays some type of courage, intelligence, or bravery that allows him to become a hero.

These are five times that Ron was a coward, and five times he was a hero.

10 Coward: Devil’s Snare

One of Ron’s most cowardly acts comes at the end of Philosopher’s Stone, after the trio go down the trap door. They become ensnared in Devil’s Snare, but Hermione gets out by remaining calm.

Ron fails to listen to her instructions and panics even more as the plants slowly envelop his body and mouth. Luckily, Hermione remembers the Lumos Solem spell and gets him out.

9 Hero: Playing Chess

That said, the end of Philosopher’s Stone also contains one of Ron’s most heroic moments. It’s established earlier in the film that Ron is a good chess player, and this comes into play during the climax, as the trio must play a game of Wizard’s Chess to proceed.

Ron successfully defeats the magic chess board, even sacrificing himself for a checkmate in the process. Luckily, his efforts are both recognized and rewarded by Dumbledore.

8 Coward: Aragog

Ron’s cowardice is at full display again throughout much of Chamber of Secrets. So much so that it starts to get a little annoying after a while.

One of his most cowardly moments comes about when Harry and Ron travel into the Forbidden Forest to talk to Aragog. Ron is in shambles the entire time, from following the tiny little spiders to meeting Aragog in the flesh. It’s by far one of his weakest moments in the entire series.

7 Hero: Going Into The Chamber

That said, Ron develops quite a lot throughout Chamber of Secrets. By the climax of the film, both Harry and Ron essentially kidnap Lockhart, expose his life as a fraud, and force him into the Chamber of Secrets against his will.

Putting it that way, it doesn’t sound very heroic. But it’s a huge moment for the cowardly Ron Weasley, as he actively and intentionally enters the Chamber of Secrets to help save the day.

6 Coward: Basically Everything Else Throughout Chamber Of Secrets

There are way more moments of cowardice throughout Chamber of Secrets aside from the Aragog scene. He whines basically the entire movie about his parents’ flying car. He cries about his broken wand. He acts like a meek coward throughout the entire polyjuice potion sequence. He cowers from Moaning Myrtle. He shows incredible fear from his mother’s Howler.

He’s a child at the end of the day, but still, no other kid throughout the movie acts like this…

5 Hero: Going With Harry

By the time Deathly Hallows rolls around, Ron is actually quite brave and heroic – the cowardly Ron of old is almost entirely gone. Going with Harry to procure the Horcruxes was incredibly brave.

He had to leave his studies and family behind, and he showed intense bravery throughout much of the movie by containing his anxiety and carrying the locket. He eventually snaps, but then again, anyone would have.

4 Coward: Everything With Sirius

Prisoner of Azkaban is an awkward middle point in Ron’s development. While his bravery is starting to show, he still acts in a bit of a cowardly manner.

He is quite defenseless when it comes to Sirius, as he continuously shows incredible fear towards him throughout the movie. This is especially bad during the climax, as Ron is essentially reduced to lots of cowering, screaming, and sniveling.

3 Hero: Destroying The Horcruxes

What some people may not have expected is Ron’s direct role in destroying the horcruxes. Ron himself destroys Slytherin’s locket by slashing it with Gryffindor’s sword (even overcoming its influence and defense in the process).

He also kicks Ravenclaw’s diadem into the Fiendfyre, and he has an indirect role in the destruction of Hufflepuff’s cup, as he takes Hermione into the Chamber to procure the basilisk fang.

2 Coward: The Dementors

There’s another thing that horrifies Ron in Prisoner of Azkaban – the Dementors. Granted, the Dementors scare pretty much everyone, but Ron is explicitly shown reacting in fear during the train attack sequence.

Meanwhile, Harry and Hermione show more curiosity and uneasiness than outright terror – even though it goes directly for Harry and tries to suck out his soul.

1 Hero: Unlocking The Chamber Of Secrets (& Speaking Parseltongue)

If it wasn’t for Ron, it’s possible that Hufflepuff’s cup may have never been destroyed. That’s because he took Hermione down into the Chamber while Harry went after Ravenclaw’s diadem.

Not only that, he also opened the locked Chamber door by speaking Parseltongue, as he had heard Harry muttering in his sleep and copied the sounds. It’s a little cheap, but it was still incredibly satisfying watching Ron speak Parseltongue.
