The latest Nintendo NX rumors suggest that the upcoming console’s controllers will include a split D-pad and a share button like the PS4’s controller.

Nintendo insists that the upcoming NX console is still scheduled to arrive in March 2017, but gamers have yet to see an official sneak peek of the hardware. A few games have already been confirmed for Nintendo’s next system (including Zelda: Breath of the Wild), but consumers have no idea what kind of experience to expect, unless they turn to rumors and supposed leaks. The latest of those rumors suggest a few major changes to Nintendo’s typical controller layout.

A recent patent offered further evidence that the Nintendo NX controllers would split apart to work either with a mobile version of the console or in front of a TV and new insider information claims to have more details about this new controller layout. According to a source at Let’s Play Video Games the NX controller comes equipped with both a share button and a split D-pad.

The report suggests that the controller will feature a similar share button to the one found on PS4’s controllers. The button will “apparently allow the upload of still images and video directly to Miiverse, Twitter, Facebook or YouTube.”

According to the source, in addition to uploading to the compatible social services, users will also have the option to save the images and videos to an external memory device. Nintendo has historically been less than open to users sharing game experiences on services like Twitch and YouTube, so this may be an indication that the company is taking its first steps towards lightening up on that front.

The share button feels like a natural evolution for Nintendo, but the split D-pad is a little more of a mystery. The report doesn’t offer any information about why the company would move away from the solid D-pad layout, so it will likely remain a mystery until official word comes out about the controller from Nintendo.

The company is already hyping the new mysterious console, with Reggie explaining that the system will have a continuous beat of new, great games. Although a new console is exciting, Nintendo will be in a strange spot this holiday season, stuck between promoting a new piece of hardware that isn’t available until the new year and trying to sell software for a console that will be outdated in just a few months. It will be an interesting balancing act and we look forward to seeing what approach the company takes.
