Each season of RuPaul’s Drag Race begins with a new group of drag queens. As the competitors come and go, one thing has remained relatively constant, Michelle Visage is always ready to give her advice (no matter how harsh it may be) from the judging panel. We’ve seen Visage time and time again on the big screen, but how much do you really know about her?
Ever since season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Michelle Visage has been a regular judge of the drag Olympics. She’s also appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK as a judge. During Canada’s Drag Race, Michelle hosted the Snow Ball too. Other than RuPaul herself, Visage has spent the most amount of time on the judge panel of Drag Race. When she’s not advising drag queens on their runway looks, she hosts an exit interview series for eliminated contestants called, Whatcha Packin’. The interviews covers contestant’s experiences on Drag Race in addition to looks that viewers may or may not have seen during the competition.
RuPaul and Visage also have a podcast called What’s the Tee where they discuss whatever they want with their usual comedy and flavor. Off the screen, Michelle is well known as a long-standing advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, she’s expressed in that past that she would be interested in hosting her own reality TV competition for female drag performers. That’s what we know about Michelle today, but what about her past?
RuPaul and Michelle have been friends for over 30 years, long before Drag Race began. They first bonded within the New York club scene in the 1980s. At the time, they were a part of the voguing movement which has become mainstream. Somewhere along the line, Visage and Ru began their careers, both of which have been successful. According to Capital FM, Michelle started out as a pop singer in the groups The S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M. and Seduction. Her biggest hit is considered to be It’s Gonna Be a Lovely Day by The S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M. on the soundtrack, The Bodyguard. Other big hits included Two to Make It Right by Seduction and Crash (Have Some Fun) by TKA, where Michelle was a featured artist. In 2015, Michelle released her book, The Diva Rules: Ditch the Drama, Find Your Strength and Sparkle Your Way to the Top.
In 2019, Visage played the role of the contestant instead of a judge on Strictly Come Dancing. She partnered with Giovanni Pernice. Although, it was reported that she didn’t take the elimination from the competition too well, but can you expect any less from a no-filter diva like Michelle? Outside of Visage’s professional life, she’s married to David Case, a screenwriter and author from Los Angeles. They originally met during an industry event and tied the knot in 1997. Today, they share two daughters, Lillie and Lola, who are both in their late teens. On their 22nd anniversary, Michelle wrote alongside an old photo, “This was a date night. I was at a club gig for my job… he wanted to come along to see what I did at night. A week later we were engaged… I have no idea where the time went, however, I know where my boobs went!” Visage was referring to her breast implant removals due to Hashimoto’s Disease, a condition that involves your immune system attacking the thyroid.
As you can see, Michelle has had quite a successful career from being a pop singer to a memoirist to a reality TV host. She’s seen a lot in show biz, which is why she’s such a long-standing judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. We can’t wait to see what fashion advice she gives next to the remaining season 13 queens!
