Russian Doll Season 2 Will be Very Different Says Star

Russian Doll season 2 will be very different according to star Charlie Barnett who also says that filming has wrapped on the Netflix show’s second entry. Created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, Russian Doll premiered on Netflix back in February 2019. The series begins with Nadia Vulvokov (Lyonne), a game developer who finds herself caught in a time loop where she has to relive her 36th birthday each time she dies. In order to get out of her hellish predicament, she tracks down Alan Zaveri (Charlie Barnett), a man who finds himself stuck in a loop of his own.

When its eight episodes arrived on Netflix, Russian Doll became a hit. Critics and audiences praised the series, lauding its performances and unexpected pathos. It received several nominations at the Emmys, including in the Outstanding Comedy and Lead Actress categories, and Russian Doll season 2 was subsequently confirmed in June 2019. Though filming was slated to begin the following March, production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But even as filming began and casting announcements were reported, story details were kept under wraps.

However, in a new interview with TV Insider, Barnett offers a glimpse of what to expect when the acclaimed dramedy returns. Though the actor wouldn’t reveal too much, he did note the departure from season 1. “Russian Doll is very different, this [season],” he said, teasing that the differences occur within “the principals that have followed up last season.” Barnett also confirmed that filming had officially concluded.

Barnett is careful not to reveal too much in his response, but his comments do potentially line up with what Headland, as co-creator, has said while discussing the future of Russian Doll. Headland has noted that, while the first season is meant to stand on its own, the series was pitched as running for three seasons. The c0-creator also revealed that future installments may not necessarily follow the story and the characters introduced in the show’s initial eight episodes. For now, while it’s known that Lyonne and Barnett will reprise their roles and that they’ll be joined by Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy in addition to District 9 star Sharlto Copley, specifics remain a secret. And that could be for the best.

The finale of Russian Doll was, in its way, understated and moving. It led to plenty of interpretations but even more so, a sense of satisfaction about how the series seemingly emerged out of nowhere to become one of the best new shows of its year. It will be interesting to see when more concrete details do begin to emerge, whether the writers will continue down an already established path or start anew. One popular theory is that Nadia and Alan might help someone else caught in a loop, learning more about their own experiences in the process.
