Ryan Potter’s Tim Drake audition tape for Ben Affleck’s unmade The Batman helped land him the role of Beast Boy on Titans. While Batman has been reinvented many times on the big screen, Robin hasn’t been so lucky. A cameo scene for the character was featured in the script for Tim Burton’s Batman, with Kiefer Sutherland rumored for the role, but it was deemed unnecessary and cut. Robin was later supposed to appear as a mechanic who helps repair the damaged Batmobile in Batman Returns, before helping Batman in the finale. Marlon Wayans was cast in the role and attended costume fittings before Robin was cut again.

Wayans was later supposed to return for Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, but the part was recast with Chris O’Donnell instead. The actor would reprise the character for Batman & Robin too but while there were plans for a Robin solo movie, the negative reception to the fourth entry put the franchise on ice for years. Critical and fan reception to O’Donnell’s version of Robin was also mixed. Chris Nolan opted not to include a traditional version of Batman’s sidekick in his Dark Knight trilogy, with Christian Bale famously declaring if Robin appeared he’d chain himself up and refuse to work.

The potential appearance of Robin in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice was a source of heavy speculation leading up to the film’s release, with fans predicting Jena Malone was playing a version of Carrie Kelley. The movie would ultimately reveal the Joker had killed Robin at some point in the past, and Zack Snyder would later claim he intended to introduced Carrie at some point. In 2016, Ryan Potter put together a short video fight scene, which was intended to pitch Ben Affleck on his ability to play Robin in his solo Batman movie.

Ryan Potter previously voiced the main character Hiro in Big Hero 6, and the “Tim Drake Fight Concept” video is a good showcase for his action skills. Of course, Ben Affleck ultimately decided not to direct The Batman and would eventually quit the role of Batman in 2019. Titans producer Geoff Johns later revealed Ryan Potter sent in other audition tapes for the Tim Drake role while he was working on the Ben Affleck Batman, which helped land Potter the role of Gar Logan/Beast Boy on the show.

While the Ryan Potter Tim Drake video didn’t land him the part of Robin in the DCEU, it’s nice to see his work paid off. Matt Reeves took over as director on The Batman once Affleck departed and Robert Pattinson (High Life) was later cast as the title character. There’s currently no word on whether or not The Batman will include Robin, but if it does, Ryan Potter is still in with a good chance if they need to find Tim Drake.
