Ryan Reynolds Free Guy Is Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes

Video game satire Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds is officially Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release in theaters. Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy follows Reynolds’ character Guy, a non-player character in the video game Free City, who works as a bank teller. When a program is inserted into the video game, Guy becomes aware that his entire world is virtual and decides to become the hero and try to stop the developers from shutting down the game. Free Guy also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rel Howery.

Levy has said that Free Guy isn’t just a video game movie, but something much more relatable to the human experience than it appears. What that means is unclear – for the most part, plot details have been kept under wraps save for what has been revealed in early trailers for the movie. Free Guy will hit theaters August 13, over a year after it was initially scheduled to be released. The movie was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Disney opted not to release the movie on streaming, saving the action-comedy for the big screen.

Now, it seems that may have been the best decision. As reviews for Free Guy have rolled in ahead of its debut this Friday, most have been overwhelmingly positive and that is reflected in the movie’s RT score. As of this writing, Free Guy sits at 87% on the site and it was just Certified Fresh, a marker of the amount of positive reviews the film has received.

Reynolds has clearly found his comfort spot in action-comedies. His signature role in Deadpool and its sequel has allowed the actor to thrive in both his performances and his writing abilities. Similarly, movies like Detective Pikachu, Hobbs & Shaw, and The Hitman’s Bodyguard have proven his action star capabilities. With Free Guy firmly in the hands of Disney now, the film has the opportunity to launch a new franchise with Reynolds at the helm and he’s clearly more than capable of handling it.

As mentioned before, early reviews for Free Guy praise the movie and its Truman Show-like riff on video games. With the ability to insert Disney Easter Eggs and homages, the movie will surely be a delight for audiences on multiple levels. While Rotten Tomatoes is certainly never a sure-fire indicator of whether or not a film will please audiences, Reynolds and those involved certainly seem to be a recipe success, making Free Guy a late summer treat for many.
