Ryan Reynolds Rewrites Deadpool History to Include Bernie Sanders

Thanks to his latest appearance in his distinct winter wear, independent senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont has been immortalized in cyberspace as a partner in crimefighting to Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool.

The Deadpool star posted a Photoshopped photo to Instagram of the film’s antihero seated next to Sen. Sanders — an image taken from Sanders’ appearance Wednesday at the presidential inauguration that was quickly used in numerous memes.

Many of the luminaries who attended the ceremony for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris — including the vice president herself — were praised for their fashion choices for the day. But Sanders’ image at the inauguration, seated alone on a folding chair with his arms crossed, evidently drew the most attention.

Sanders wore a gray winter parka made by Burton, a company based in Burlington, Vermont; and patterned, hand-knitted mittens that were a gift from Essex Junction, Vermont, teacher Jen Ellis, according to Esquire. Sanders completed the ensemble with a blue surgical mask. Sanders wore the same coat in campaign advertising during his own run for the presidency.

Reynolds starred as Deadpool in two R-rated films for 20th Century Fox, which has since been absorbed by the Walt Disney Company. A planned third film would integrate the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, Deadpool 3 is in development at Marvel Studios but does not currently have a release date.
