Sailor Moon 10 Things That Make No Sense About Luna

When it comes to magical girls, it’s important to remember, not just the magical girls themselves, but the characters behind them: the mascots the creators dream up to give the girls their powers and mentor them as they use their magic. Probably one of the most famous of these is Luna, the talking cat with a crescent moon from Sailor Moon.

That said, there’s a lot about Luna that doesn’t make much sense if fans think about it. Whether it is her personality, her role in the story, or even how other characters react to her, fans of Sailor Moon have questions about the magical kitty.

10 Her Backstory

For most of the series, fans would be forgiven for thinking Luna and her partner Artemis originated from the Moon. In the last manga arc, however, they are revealed to be from the planet Mau. It’s never really clear just why they left and got jobs working for Queen Serenity, who decided to employ talking cats for unknown reasons. Adding to the confusion, they are also revealed to have human forms that they seldom take advantage of.

Also, fans also have to wonder, if she and Artemis aren’t actually from the Moon, why do they have those crescent moon-shaped marks on their foreheads? Or why they have moon-themed names.

9 Her Christmas Wish

During “The Lover of Princess Kaguya,” when Luna falls in love with a human astronaut, Kakeru Ozora, she wishes to become human so she can be with him. Chibi-Usa eventually convinces Usagi to use the power of the Silver Crystal to grant her a human form, explicitly said to be something of a Christmas wish in the original manga, to give her a happy moment with Kakeru.

The manga story was adapted for a movie that corresponds with Sailor Moon S.

8 Her Workload

When dividing her workload with her partner Artemis, it didn’t seem like he got the fair end of the stick. Luna got to have at least four of the Sailor Guardians on her team, while Artemis only had Minako/Sailor Venus to deal with the forces of the Dark Agency. Alternatively, why was Luna the one tasked with finding four of the Guardians while Artemis stopped at one?

One might ask why the Outers do not have a guardian cat, but fans can only assume that’s because they don’t require the same kind of guidance as the Inners.

7 She’s A Horrible Judge Of Character

After Usagi saved her from those bullies and removed her bandages, she almost immediately recognized her as Sailor Moon. But ever since then, Luna has gradually become a horrible judge of character.

She thought Ami Mizuno was a monster in disguise (she’s Sailor Mercury), she had similar suspicions about Makoto Kino (who turned out to be Sailor Jupiter), and thought Rei Hino was the Moon Princess the characters were searching for. Of course, the Moon Princess turned out to be somebody much closer to home than she thought. To her credit, Luna’s sensory powers do let her know when something is going on, but they could be a little more helpful.

6 She’s Kind Of Careless

When first encountering Rei, she randomly leaves her transformation pen at her temple without telling her about it. While fans could argue that she had guessed Rei was Sailor Mars, she was still surprised when Rei had the mark of Mars appear on her forehead, suggesting she was leaving it up to chance. And the pen was pretty useless if Rei didn’t know what it was or how to use it.

There are plenty of times when Luna acts foolishly when it comes to her mission, from being caught talking in public to showing up in places where cats don’t belong, like Usagi’s school.

5 All Those Magic Gadgets

Luna gives Sailor Moon and the Inner Guardians a lot of helpful items in their fight against evil, from transformation items and communicators to special items, like Sailor Mercury’s computer and Sailor Moon’s disguise pen.

Fans have to wonder where she keeps all these things. Are they in hyperspace? Does she keep them inside of her? As mentioned, when Rei gets access to her first transformation pen, it seemed to fall right out of her.

4 She Keeps A Lot Of Stuff From The Girls

When the girls are restored to life after the destruction of the Dark Kingdom, Luna bides her time restoring everyone’s memories. While it makes sense at first that she wants to honor Usagi’s wishes, once a new enemy appears, she hesitates to restore the other characters’ memories, as if she fully intended to let Usagi handle the new threat all by herself. And, as even Usagi calls her out on, she could have at least tried to restore Mamoru’s memories.

Luna even takes her sweet time in giving the girls access to their new items and powers after defeating the Dark Kingdom. They surely could have used these back then.

3 Her Connection To Queen Beryl

Sailor Moon 10 Things That Make No Sense About Luna

This one is especially for fans who’ve seen the original Japanese version of the show, where Queen Beryl and Luna share a voice actress: Keiko Han. Even DiC’s classic English dub, which normally had different actresses for the two, had Luna’s regular, Jill Frappier, voice Queen Beryl in one episode.

A popular fan theory was that it was simply meant as red herring for children watching the show so that they wouldn’t think just because characters sounded alike meant there was some connection between them. Also, Han wasn’t credited as Beryl until the very last episode of the first season.

2 Luna-P

When Chibi-Usa enters the story, she has a mysterious toy always floating right beside her: Luna-P. It can change into almost anything, is capable of casting magic spells, and is even sentient.

But fans have to wonder: why was there a toy based on Luna? Chib-Usa already has her own talking cat: Diana.

Even the original English dub seemed somewhat confused by Luna getting a toy based off of her: she was once accidentally given Luna’s voice when Sailor Pluto was using it to talk to Chibi-Usa (“Rini”).

1 Sailor Luna

In the live-action Sailor Moon show, being exposed to the power of Sailor Moon’s Silver Crystal eventually gave Luna the power to, not only transform into a human girl, but even become a Sailor Guardian herself.

This brings up a lot of questions. Can anyone, or anything, become a Sailor Guardian? It’s possible that Sailor Luna is just an advanced disguise that Luna uses with her transformation device, which resembles the other Guardians’ phones that enable them to don special disguises. Also, why is Sailor Luna so young? Fans may forget that Luna herself is very young so her human form being young make sense, too. They think she’s older only because the English dub made her sound very mature and British.
