Saints Row Reboot Release Date Trailer Plot & News to Know

After eight years without a new game, Saints Row is finally coming back. Following years of speculation and some major teases, series developer Volition appeared at Gamescom Opening Night Live to officially announce the newest entry in the franchise. The developer also opened the show with a trailer, offering a preliminary look at what to expect out of the title, which is simply called Saints Row.

Fans have clamored for a new Saints Row game for years. Embracer Group (the parent company of THQ Nordic and Deep Silver) seemed to take notice, as it previously announced in 2019 that Volition was deep in development on the next mainline entry. Now, Volition is finally confident in showing off the game. As gamers look forward to this new release, there’s a lot of info to take note of.

Saints Rows’ Trailer

Volition debuted its first trailer for Saints Row at the start of the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream. The trailer featured no gameplay but was instead a cinematic CGI trailer serving to represent what the game is expecting to be. It did, however, introduce fans to the game’s four main characters: Kevin, The Boss, Eli, and Nina. The trailer quickly kicks into the violence, with Nina witnessing the shooting of an arms dealer and the cast stealing a car loaded with expensive weaponry.

The trailer appears to capture the essence of what the series is known for. Saints Row has long been seen as the wackier alternative to Grand Theft Auto, and this trailer showcases that. Characters casually observe others being shot, a motorcycle flips through the air and hits a rider, and near the end of the trailer, the antagonist’s car gets squashed by a giant neon cowboy head. Even as this new entry reboots the formula, it appears to be keeping true to what the series is known for, sticking to the outlandish, absurdist approach of the first four entries.

What We Know About Saints Row So Far

Saints Row Reboot Release Date Trailer Plot & News to Know

Little is currently known about this new Saints Row reboot. Outside of this first trailer, the only gameplay so far has come in the form of a 19-second teaser. Volition has noted that Saints Row, despite retaining the wackiness of the series, will depart a bit from Saints Row IV’s over-the-top approach. It will instead shoot to match the approach of Saints Row: The Third, which had a strong balance between comedy and seriousness.

The game will center around the new gang and take place in a fictional city of Santo Ileso, which takes inspiration from the American Southwest. The new characters will attempt to control various contemporary crime rings from three other gangs that rule different areas of Santo Ileso. These areas include Rancho Providencio, a rural town that’s become pretty run-down; El Dorado, a casino-based area bearing similarities to Las Vegas; and Monte Vista, the suburban area of the city. This city will also feature new vertical areas that players will be able to take advantage of with new tools.

When Will Saints Row Release?

Though Saints Row’s reveal announced a February 25, 2022 release date, it has since been delayed to August 23, 2022. The delay was announced on Twitter, with Volition’s Chief Creative Officer Jim Boone saying it was to ensure the game meets the standards and lives up to the vision the developers set for themselves.

Saints Row will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It will be also be available on PC exclusively through the Epic Games Store. Despite Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV receiving Nintendo Switch releases, it has not been announced for Switch.
