A Ring of Honor (ROH) legend, Samoa Joe made his return to the promotion at Supercard of Honor XV on April 1 ahead of WWE’s WrestleMania 38 event. Of course, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) president Tony Khan recently purchased ROH from the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sure enough, Khan soon confirmed that Joe — who was released from WWE earlier this year — had signed with AEW and strongly implied that the Samoan Submission Machine would be on hand for this coming Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite on TBS.
Samoa Joe (real name Nuufolau Joel Seanoa) made his professional wrestling debut in 1999. He is a veteran of the independent scene and is perhaps best known for the time he spent in ROH and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA)/Impact Wrestling from the early 2000s to the mid 2010s. Joe ultimately made the jump to WWE, debuting as part the company’s NXT developmental brand in 2015 and subsequently becoming the first two-time NXT Champion in the promotion’s history.
Joe was called up to WWE’s main roster in early 2017, going on to become a two-time United States Champion. In late 2019, Joe began providing color commentary on Monday Night Raw while recovering from an injury, returning to action just before the end of the year. However, Joe was taken out of action yet again in February 2020 after suffering another injury. He returned to the Raw commentary desk in April 2020.
On April 15, 2021, Joe was released from WWE alongside a slew of other superstars. That said, he managed to negotiate a new contract shortly thereafter, returning to the NXT brand in June to serve as the personal enforcer of General Manager William Regal (who has since made the jump to AEW himself). Joe finally returned to NXT’s active roster in July to challenge then-NXT Champion Karrion Kross for the strap. Joe defeated Kross at NXT TakeOver 36 in August to reclaim the title, making him the first — and to date, only — three-time NXT Champion in history.
However, Joe’s third reign as NXT Champion only lasted for a recognized 20 days. On Sept. 12, Joe posted a video to social media in which he officially relinquished the title, citing an undisclosed injury. It was later reported on Jan. 6 of this year that Joe had been released from WWE yet again.
With his move to AEW, Joe joins a number of fellow ex-ROH, ex-WWE wrestlers currently signed to the promotion, including CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Keith Lee.
