In the 2000’s, Saturday Night Live continued to thrive on elevating established talent, to varying degrees success, and launched successful careers for the newcomers. The result is a strong line of cast members, even if some did not last long. Yet, some of the cast members did break ground for this decade, from the SNL Digital Shorts to the memorable recurring sketches.
For that, here are the best not-ready-for-primetime players who debuted in the 2000’s. The 2000’s brought many unforgettable performers who went on to huge successes during and/or after their tenures in SNL. Rest assured, they are definite favorites.
10 Will Forte
Before he was The Last Man on Earth, Will Forte was a comic performer who can juggle deadpan roles and over-the-top characters. Forte’s style of humor is all sorts of bizarre. During his tenure in SNL, he brought several signature characters to the small screen, like the soft-spoken Sen. Tim Calhoun, the enthusiastically clueless ESPN reporter Greg Stink, the hermit Falconer, the shady Jeff Montgomery and the time-tested MacGruber (a parody of MacGyver).
For the latter, MacGruber was adapted into a 2010 comedy film with Kristen Wiig and Ryan Philippe that was a box-office failure but was a cult hit.
9 Seth Meyers
The current face of Late Night, Seth Meyers had a long yet steady run on his SNL tenure from 2001 to 2014. He did impressions for Anderson Cooper, Ryan Seacrest, Peyton Manning, Ty Pennington, Tom Cruise, and Kevin Federline; and brought characters like scientist David Zinger, Dan Needler from the “couple that should be divorced”, William Fitzpatrick of Top o’ the Morning and Boston Powers, one of the Original Kings of Catchphrase Comedy.
Yet, his most popular contribution is being a Weekend Update anchor from 2006 to 2014. With his time with co-anchor Amy Poehler, they popularized the “Really!?!” segments.
8 Jason Sudeikis
Jason Sudeikis is usually typecasted as the straight everyman for any sketch he is placed during his Saturday Night Live tenure. But that does not limit him from having memorable characters under his belt.
He was the snobbish Male A-hole, the sadistic Officer Sikorsky on the Scared Straight program, the more informative Pete Twinkle of ESPN Classics, the complaining Devil for Weekend Update, the news anchor Jack Rizzoli who faces off against Herb Welch, and the Southerner Marshall T. Boudreaux for Maine Justice. He also gave well-known impressions of Mitt Romney and Joe Biden (until now). Such a comedic range.
7 Fred Armisen
Speaking of range, in comes Fred Armisen. Like a few cast members, he is a triple threat performer. And he shared this range during his time. His characters include Mackey from “Rialto Grande”, eccentric art dealer Nooni Schoener, Hispanic host Manuel Ortiz, the aloof commentator Nicholas Fehn, the unprepared Garth of Garth & Kat, the Californian Stuart who kept asking “What are you doing here?”, one of the “Dictator’s Two Best Friends from Growing Up,” and the erotic Regine.
He was also an expert impressionist of Prince, Ira Glass, former governor David Paterson, former mayor Michael Bloomberg and famously, Barack Obama.
6 Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler’s introduction to SNL came from Tina Fey convincing her to join the show. And that partnership paid off with one of the strongest female performers for Saturday Night Live.
While she is known for doing impressions of Hillary Clinton, Nancy Grace, Katie Couric, Britney Spears, Madonna and countless more, she is best known for three contributions: one is the loud 10-year-old Kaitlyn, two is the equally deadpan Bronx Beat co-host Betty Caruso, and three is being co-anchors on Weekend Update for Tina Fey, Horatio Sanz and Seth Meyers. After SNL, Poehler became Leslie Knope for Parks & Recreation.
5 Kenan Thompson
It is amazing that Kenan Thompson had reached this far as an SNL performer for three decades. From 2003, Thompson continued his proclivity for sketch comedy after his Kenan & Kel days to bring a lot of characters and impressions. His impressions include Al Roker, Al Sharpton, Alfonso Ribeiro, Cee Lo Green, Charles Barkley, David Ortiz, Forest Whitaker, LL Cool J, Martin Luther King, Jr., Raven Symone and most frequently Steve Harvey, the most for an SNL player with 139.
He also appeared in memorable sketches like What Up with That?, The Californians, The Last Call and Principal Daniel Frye.
4 Andy Samberg
Andy Samberg and his pals Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone can be credited on boosting SNL’s ingenuity in creating viral sketches with their Digital Shorts. Yet, that does not deter from Samberg standing out as a solid cast member.
On his time from 2005 to 2012, his best known sketch was Blizzard Man, a 90’s-trapped rapper who dissuades producers but amuses other rappers. He also brought some characters to Weekend Update like Liam the Teenager Who Just Woke Up, Larry the Goose, and Nicolas Cage. But as mentioned, he was known for his parody songs with his “Lonely Island” buddies.
3 Tina Fey
Tina Fey can be lauded for two areas: being one of the strongest cast members and being the first female head writer of SNL, which is all driven by her natural ability to write jokes and deliver them effectively. Thus, she became the co-anchor of Weekend Update with Jimmy Fallon (2000-2004) and Amy Poehler (2004-2006). Her position as head writer made her seldom to appear in other sketches.
But after leaving SNL to create and produce 30 Rock, Fey still stick with SNL for six hosting gigs and her famous Sarah Palin impression that became a sensation. Fey is comic gold.
2 Bill Hader
Bill Hader is one of the rarest SNL MVP’s that made every character count and had them stuck in viewers’ minds. His contributions to the show are so prolific that it needs a separate list. Among his memorable characters are Hollywood Dish’s Brady Trunk, Secret Word host Lyle Round, The Californian’s Devin, What’s That Name host Vince Blight, Italian host Vinny Vedecci, WXPD reporter Herb Welch and his signature character, Stefon.
His memorable bits do not end there, since he gave notable impressions of Alan Alda, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood, Eddie Vedder, Harvey Fierstein, Lindsey Buckingham and Vincent Price. The best.
1 Kristen Wiig
And just like Hader, Kristen Wiig had a similar run of making every character and impression stick in the viewers’ subconscious. Her lovable characters include the mischievous Gilly, the overzealous Target Lady, the obnoxious Hollywood Dish co-host Anastasia Sticks, the Secret Word contestant Mindy Grayson, the questionable Penelope, the superficial Shana, the Californian Karina, the fast-talking Judy Grimes and the small-handed Dooneese.
And her funny impressions include Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift, Kathie Lee Gifford, Jamie Lee Curtis and Gwen Stefani. Wiig’s constant appearance in SNL made her appear in 124 sketches overall. With that range, Wiig became a successful comedienne.
