The famed show, Saturday Night Live, brought in funny men and women who found success during their tenure in the show and spawned eventual fame in movies and other TV shows. For once in a while, these cast members would return for guest cameos or even hosting gigs.
For the latter, it is impressive how some former cast members deliver the same comic timing that they do when in hosting an SNL episode. Better yet, they also brought back their memorable sketches and characters for once. In honor of that, here are the 10 best cast members who hosted on Saturday Night Live.
10 Ben Stiller
Believe it or not, Ben Stiller was once a performer for Saturday Night Live, but he dropped off from the show during its 14th season, due to creative differences. Despite this, he still manages to get hosting gigs and cameo appearances from time to time. For the former, Stiller hosted on October 24, 1998 and on October 8, 2011, where he brought Derek Zoolander as a guest in Weekend Update; he brought back Zoolander for the 41st season.
Stiller recently guested on the show as Michael Cohen, the most notable being a parody of Meet the Parents with Robert De Niro as Robert Mueller.
9 Billy Crystal
Billy Crystal is the first Saturday Night Live cast member who hosted prior joining the show. Before he was hired for the 10th season, Crystal was already an established comedian, having a prominent role in the sitcom Soap. Thus, he is aware of how showmanship works. He truly gave his signature chops during the two hosting duties on the 8th and 9th season of SNL.
On joining the show for one season, Crystal implemented the same comedic timings for his characters like Fernando Lamas with “You look mah-velous!” and the night guard Willie with “Don’t ya hate it when…?”
8 Kristen Wiig
Kristen Wiig started her tenure on the 12th of November 2003 in the show’s 31st season. At her time, she created a notable run as a consistent performer. She brought to life many of SNL’s most unforgettable characters like Gilly, Dooneese from The Laurence Welk Show, Penelope, Shana, Target Lady, Karina from The Californians and Kat from Garth and Kat. Her tenure has been labeled as beloved that she received a special sendoff at the 37th season’s finale.
Wiig hosted the show spectacularly twice: first on Season 38, where she brought back her memorable characters, and second on Season 42.
7 Bill Murray
Given Bill Murray’s funny turn as a performer for SNL, it is interesting to learn that he is the second former SNL cast member to be inducted to the Five-Timers Club; the first was Chevy Chase. Having currently hosted five times, Murray is a bright presence and will often perform alongside the musical guests. During his hosting gigs, he appeared as Nick the Lounge Singer twice. And on his latest hosting turn, he reenacted scenes from Caddyshack with Chase.
Bill Murray recently made a cameo appearance for the 43rd season as Steve Bannon.
6 Bill Hader
Bill Hader is one of the most active SNL performers of the new century, having brought to life a tremendous amount of characters and impressions. With signature performances of Stefon, Vinny Vedecci, Herb Welch, Al Pacino, Alan Alda and more, it is a no-brainer to have him host twice.
On his first hosting duty on October 11, 2014, Hader brought back senior reporter Herb Welch and retired army official-turned-puppeteer Anthony Peter Coleman to amusing effect. For his second one, he brought back The Californians sketch, alongside Fred Armisen. And for both instances, Stefon brightened up Weekend Update with his quirks.
5 Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler started off her tenure in SNL untimely. Yet, she cultivated a notable presence during her time in the sketch show. Among her sketches and impressions, her turn in the Weekend Update desk is arguably her strongest in terms of comedy. Her pairings with (her best friend) Tina Fey and Seth Meyers during two Weekend Update periods allowed her to have comic timing and seamless chemistry with them.
The Parks and Recreation star hosted the Season 36 premiere. And on the 41st season, she paired up with Fey as co-hosts for its Christmas episode. Both episodes are treats.
4 Eddie Murphy
One of the most vibrant cast members of SNL from the last century, Eddie Murphy was a brash presence during his time. Giving life to memorable characters like Gumby, Buckwheat, Velvet Jones and Mr. Robinson while maintaining his unorthodox brand of humor, Murphy rose to fame that made him land roles in 80’s comedies like Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places.
As far as hosting duties g0, his first instance came as an emergency after Nick Nolte, his 48 Hours co-star and host for the night, fell ill. His next two instances of hosting are during Seasons 10 and 45.
3 Dana Carvey
A master impressionist and performer, Dana Carvey engraved a lively and remarkable presence during his tenure as a cast member. From Garth of Wayne’s World to the Church Lady in Church Chat, Carvey would always bring the best of his characters. Sometimes, it seems like he never left the show, given he’s hosted the show four times (In 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2011).
When he hosted, late former President George H. W. Bush made a cameo appearance to criticize Carvey’s impression of him, and of course, Carvey would appear as Enid Strict for Church Chat.
2 Tina Fey
Tina Fey started out in the show as SNL’s first female head writer and was often credited to revitalizing the show’s humorous streak in the 2000s. Her turn in Weekend Update, being paired with Jimmy Fallon and Amy Poehler for two periods, also rejuvenated the segment with fresher jokes and ample chemistry. Even though Fey left the show, she would be brought back to bring her famous Sarah Palin impressions for the 2008 period. And during her hosting appearances, Fey would appear as Palin thrice.
Speaking of, Tina Fey is the first former SNL cast member to be inducted to the famed Five-Timers Club.
1 Will Ferrell
What more can be said for Will Ferrell? During his time as a repertory player, he has been acknowledged for his hilarious sketches (featuring music teacher Marty Culp, Spartan cheerleader Craig Buchanan, head-bobbing clubber Steve Butabi and giddy Gene Frenkle of Blue Öyster Cult) and his spot-on impressions of Alex Trebek, Neil Diamond, James Lipton, Ted Kaczynski, and George W. Bush.
On his five hosting gigs, Ferrell would bring the same comedic energy he has on his time. During those instances, he would bring back the Celebrity Jeopardy sketches, revive his impression of singer Robert Goulet for a ringtone commercial, and jam with the musical guests with a cowbell.
