Sausage Party 2 Updates Will The Animated Sequel Happen

The original movie proved to be a surprise smash hit, but will animated sequel Sausage Party 2 ever happen? The first Sausage Party was an R-rated comedy that followed some sentient food products, led by a sausage named Frank (Seth Rogen), who discover what happens to food once customers take them home from the store. The movie combined filthy, R-rated humor with a Pixar style animated adventure tale. It’s probably best remembered for the infamous food orgy scene at the end, which originally caused the film to receive an NC-17.

Sausage Party ends on a meta twist, where the main characters come to realize they’re cartoon characters and set off into the real world to seek the actors who voice them. The movie ends before this, but the original ending saw the gang emerge into the real world and seeing Rogen with co-stars Edward Norton and Michael Cera eating at a restaurant. This cliffhanger note and the movie’s success suggested Sausage Party 2 was inevitable, but the sequel isn’t a given either.

Seth Rogen Has A Story Concept For Sausage Party 2

Sausage Party 2 Updates Will The Animated Sequel Happen

Seth Rogen and his writing/producing partner Evan Goldberg revealed one of the reasons the original ending was cut was to save the idea for Sausage Party 2. It also would have locked them into an opening scene where the gang immediately find their real-life actors. Rogen also revealed Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of his favorite movies, so Sausage Party 2 would be a similar mix of live-action and animation, with the gang setting out on a new adventure in the real-world to meet their creators.

Neighbors 2 Turned Rogen Off Making Sequels

Despite a track record of making hit comedies with sequel potential, Rogen and Goldberg have only made one sequel with Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. They prefer to work on original material and have resisted making follow-ups to Pineapple Express and Superbad, despite demand. They gave sequels a try with Neighbors 2, but despite receiving decent reviews the movie grossed less than half of the original.

In a similar fashion to swearing off big-budget movies following their unhappy experience making Green Hornet, the response to Neighbors 2 caused the duo to believe sequels aren’t their thing either. He also said that if they were going to take the time to make another animated movie, it would probably be an original concept.

Will Sausage Party 2 Ever Happen?

While there’s an interesting story hook for Sausage Party 2, it currently seems like the odds of it happening are low. Rogen and Goldberg have historically liked to focus on new ideas and the reception to Neighbors 2 has only reinforced that. They also feel part of the reason Sausage Party was a hit was that it was something new, a computer-animated adventure with an R-rating. Sausage Party 2, on the other hand, would lose that freshness by virtue of being a follow-up. They haven’t completely ruled it out it, but if it does happen, it won’t be anytime soon.

It’s pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now that’s out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if he’d like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site. A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games – he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU – where Hawkeye is clearly the best character – to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He’s super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
