Saw 9 Will Be Less Gory & Violent Than Original Saw Movies

Darren Lynn Bousman, the director of Spiral: From the Book of Saw, explains why the film will be less violent and gory than previous Saw movies. Led by Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise is set to release in May. The story will focus on a respected police veteran (Jackson) and two detectives (played by Rock and Max Minghella) as they investigate a harrowing string of murders which evoke the city’s past. Given the involvement of the two lead actors, it’s already been revealed Spiral will represent a departure from other Saw installments.

The film will be a little lighter on its feet and more openly comedic. However, that won’t be the only departure in tone. Saw, as a franchise, is known for its elaborate and reliably gory death scenes. Increasingly, as more and more sequels were released, these fantastical kills were often the main draw for a fanbase curious to find out how the horror franchise would manage to outdo itself. In new remarks, however, Bousman explains why audiences should be ready for Spiral to be a less violent and gory experience.

Bousman, who directed several Saw films, starting with the second, spoke to Empire about his vision for Spiral. The director noted the movie will feature a decrease in the gore and violence that have been associated with the franchise. You can read Bousman’s remarks, in which he elaborates on the reason for this shift, below.

I was a younger person. Gore and violence was the gimmick, I think. Gore and violent is no longer a gimmick – it just serves the story. This is much more about character, tension and fear.

In the course of his comments, Bousman provides an instructive example of what viewers might expect from Spiral. The director mentions Rock, who helped kickstart the idea for a ninth installment, drew inspiration from David Fincher’s Se7en. The plot of Fincher’s seminal film matches what Spiral seems to be going for in its premise. Se7en used gore and violence relatively sparingly, spacing out the scenes of terror for maximum effect as it built to an unforgettable conclusion. While both Se7en and the Saw films can rightly be described as disturbing, Saw has gained a reputation for ensuring its depiction of horror was amped up and hard to invest in on an emotional level. Se7en, by contrast, was deeply rooted in character even as it presented a sort of heightened reality. As a result, to this day, some find Fincher’s work difficult to watch.

It remains to be seen if fans will be able to accept a version of Saw that strays from the popular template which has been established over the course of many years. If it succeeds, Spiral will likely be praised for offering a new spin on a film series that has occasionally felt like it’s been moving in circles. On the other hand, even if Spiral: From the Book of Saw doesn’t quite hit the mark, there will doubtlessly be a lot of initial interest and curiosity when the movie hopefully makes its long-delayed release date in a matter of months.
