Has there ever been a better horror movie antagonist than John Kramer aka Jigsaw? Well, maybe there has been one. However, none can boast of having more golden quotes than the main character of the Saw franchise. Every statement he makes is either witty or has a deeper meaning to it.

Jigsaw happens to be a former engineer who developed colon cancer and consequently, a tumor. After attempting suicide he came to appreciate life even more but also became psychotic. He thus decided to kidnap people who are careless with their lives and test their will to live using horrific games that require them to do various tasks to survive.

John Kramer revealed his motivations to the police early in the franchise in 2004’s Saw, when he was close to being apprehended in his warehouse while one of his victims was close to his death in a trap that was preparing to drill into his skull.

This obviously incites the officers to call Jigsaw sick, which makes him list the various things that really make him sick, which will become a checklist for his increasing number of his and his followers’ victims across the franchise.

2009’s Saw VI introduced a new series of traps arranged by Jigsaw after his death and carried out by his latest successor that was designed to test William Easton, head of a major health insurance company that has gotten rich denying medical claims based on their immoral policies.

Jigsaw’s instruction tape teases that the presumed outcome of who would live and who would die that was determined by his company had nothing to do with whether or not he would survive his encounter with Jigsaw/death, who didn’t care about risk assessments or loopholes. “Today, your policy will be put to the test.”

Jigsaw’s earliest victim was revealed in 2007’s Saw IV which further dived into the history of John Kramer when his ex-wife revealed how the miscarriage of his unborn daughter at the hands of a drug-addicted thief had driven him insane. That thief was put into one of John’s first traps that he even managed to escape, though John gave him a final lesson on fate and good life decisions.

Obi was one of Jigsaw’s assistants in 2005’s Saw II who helped kidnap the assembled victims of the sequel’s trap house and was put through his own test to gather antidotes for the poison coursing through their bodies. He was forced to climb into a furnace, where Jigsaw’s clue gave him the answer to escaping after it ignited thanks to a painted devil pointing to his salvation if he dared to reach through the flames.

Jigsaw’s recorded message actually featured a motivational quote in different situations that when things are at their worst and you’re in the fire, you just have to reach a little deeper to get through to the other side.

Another of the tests Easton was forced to undertake in Saw VI that continued to test the policies of his company by making him choose between a young healthy male with no relatives or a middle-aged family woman with a history of diabetes in her family, showcasing Jigsaw’s typical game of high-stakes moral conundrums.

Jigsaw’s quote states that while we are usually fairly certain about how we would react in any given situation, such as following the health insurance’s policies determining the young man as the safer pick for survival, everything changes when those decisions are weighted with humanity, forcing him to consider the middle-aged woman’s family and the loss they would feel.

This is the line that triggered the rise of Amanda as Jigsaw’s successor. In 2004’s Saw, we first saw Amanda (Shawnee Smith) as one of Jigsaw’s victims. She was tied to a chair and on her jaw, there was a massive mechanical device that Jigsaw described as a”reverse bear trap” meant to tear her mouth open if she went against the serial killer’s orders.

His orders to her were to slice open her seemingly dead chamber mate’s tummy and locate a key in his intestines. The key would then set her free from the mechanical device. However, she realized that the seemingly dead man was still breathing. Instead of aborting the task, she went on to make what would become a terrible decision by slicing the guy open and freeing herself. This moment drove her insane and put her on the path to be a killer too.

9 “Don’t Worry, You’re Sound Asleep And Can’t Feel A Thing.”

Saw II opened with the cruelty we’ve come to expect from the franchise. Police informant Michael had a spike-filled mask around his neck. Jigsaw informed him that in order to free himself, he’d have to slice through his eye in order to get the key to set himself free. He didn’t manage it and so he died.

The quote might somehow be Jigsaw’s way of implying that most people go through life without actually being alert. They don’t feel what’s coming until it’s too late. Jigsaw added another interesting statement on top of the one above, saying: “Society would call you an informant, a rat, a snitch. I call you unworthy of the body you possess.”

8 “Game Over”

Also in 2004’s Saw, we get to see one of the best plot twists in horror movie history. Jigsaw clearly enjoys using puzzles and he normally requires his victims to put the pieces together while he stays far away. But in this movie, Adam Faulkner finds out that Jigsaw was in the cell all along.

The villain was quietly lying on the floor pretending to be dead. The other victims ended up thinking that the dead body belonged to another person that had been killed. All along the audience didn’t know who Jigsaw’s face really looked like but when he stands, it all becomes clear that fans have a different level of a psychopath on their screens.

7 “Congratulations, You Are Still Alive. Most People Are So Ungrateful To Be Alive… But Not You, Not Anymore.”

This statement is quite relevant given that most of Jigsaw’s games are meant to test how much people value their own lives. Will they do anything to stay alive? Even if it means killing another person? Well, the people in the two ships in The Dark Knight really proved that they wouldn’t survive in a Saw movie. They all refused Joker’s offer to blow each other up in order to survive.

This statement was said to Amanda after she survived the test. She really did value her life but she came out broken in the end. Everyone in Jigsaw’s chamber always ended up broken or dead. Most of the time, they ended up dead.

6 “Every Day Of Your Working Life You’ve Given People News That They’ll Die. Now You Will Be The Cause Of Death”

Jigsaw didn’t hesitate to explain to his ever victims what was at stake. Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and Adam Faulkner (Leigh Whannell) were each told what they had to do. But Dr. Gordon, who happens to be one of the most interesting characters ever in the franchise, was given the most chilly breakdown of what lay ahead of him.

Initially, both of them don’t even understand why are there. When Gordon asks Adam what his name is, he hilariously responds with “My name is Very Fucking Confused. What’s your name?” But the real meaning behind Jigsaw’s words to Dr. Gordon was to show him that he previously handled death very casually but now he had to be serious with it.

5 “It Will Be Like Finding A Needle In A Haystack.”

Jigsaw likes having fun with his victims and no moment made this clear than this scene in Saw II. Here, the psychopath gives his victims the hardest of tasks, partially inspired by the presence of a drug dealer called Xavier Chavez.

He tells them that there is a key in a pit full of needles that’ll save them. All they have to do is dig through the hundreds of needles. The message? Survival isn’t easy. Not in his world at least. Obviously, this task triggers a couple of other events that leave some of the victims dead.

4 “Death Is A Surprise Party. Unless Of Course, You’re Already Dead On The Inside.”

In Saw II, Amanda who is now working with Jigsaw brings in Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) to treat the killer and keep him from dying in order for him to complete the tests and finish training her. The comment applies to both him and the doctor.

Jigsaw is already dead on the inside, that’s why he commits the heinous acts. Lynn was also living a life full of stress. She had never been the same since her son died. She was also having an affair with a man who wanted to marry her yet she wasn’t interested in anything more than sex.

3 “You Think It’s Over Just Because I Am Dead, But The Games Have Just Begun.”

Can it get more horrific than Jigsaw making an assurance that the horror will never end even after he’s dead? The man was mad but he always made extensive plans. He always near what would happen next. Calculations were his strength.

Of course, Jigsaw will always be around because the franchise has to continue. Another Amanda can always take his place but the movie won’t feel complete without him. It’s like having a Friday The 13th movie without Jason. Simply not good enough.

2 “The Rules Of Our Game Have Been Made Very Clear. You Need To Abide By Those Rules.”

It’s hard to find someone who thinks exactly like you and this is evident when he’s training Amanda. In Saw III, she rebels against Jigsaw. Unlike her mentor who always creates puzzles that have a way out, Amanda prefers making games that are unbeatable. She wants to see even the most resilient captives dead.

For someone who started out as a captive herself, she happens to be more psychotic than the main man. It’s a clear way to illustrate just how much people can change in such a short time. Eventually, Amanda’s over-enthusiasm with killing ends up being detrimental to them both.

Saw V didn’t have as many good quotes as the previous movies but at least it had this one. In all the Saw movies he appeared in, Jigsaw was good at figuring out what people were thinking. He carefully selected his victims according to their background.

And he really did leave nothing to chance except when dealing with Amanda. He ought to have known that no one else will ever do things exactly the way he wants them to be done. But where’s the fun in movies if the villains win all the time?
