Scarlet Nexus Meet The Characters

Since its official announcement last year, fans have been eagerly awaiting Bandai Namco’s newest IP, Scarlet Nexus. While the original details for the game reminded players more of Sword Art Online, the game has tried to carve out its own identity. As the release date for Scarlet Nexus gets closer and closer, Bandai Namco continues to release new information about gameplay, plot, and the game’s characters.

Scarlet Nexus sets players in the futuristic city of New Himuka, as it is overrun with monstrous beings called “Others.” Players are part of an elite team of fighters called the Others Suppression Force, or OSF, where everyone has special psionic powers native to the “brainpunk” world of Scarlet Nexus. There are numerous characters that players will interact with in the game, and here are several that have been revealed so far.

Scarlet Nexus’ Protagonists

Scarlet Nexus Meet The Characters

Since the game’s announcement, fans knew about Yuito Sumeragi, one of the main protagonists. However, Scarlet Nexus boasts two different playable characters that actually break up the game into two stories. Scarlet Nexus players explore different locations and pursue slightly different story lines depending on the character they choose.

Yuito Sumeragi

Yuito is a new recruit to the OSF, but is part of the prestigious Sumeragi family in New Himuka. After almost being killed by an Other when he was little, Yuito began to look up to the OSF in the hopes that he could one day join its ranks. With his psychokinetic abilities, Yuito can move objects with his mind when he isn’t slashing through Others with his katana.

Kasane Randall

To introduce her as the second playable character, Kasane ended up getting her own trailer. Another psychokinetic, Kasane often uses her environment to her advantage, all the while controlling throwing knives as weapons. After losing her parents during an Other attack, Kasane was adopted into the Randall family. Kasane went on to become a successful solider, and was scouted by the OSF to joins its ranks. What makes Kasane unique as a protagonist is that she seems to have prophetic dreams about “red strings,” which will probably be important to the game’s narrative.

Scarlet Nexus’ OSF New Recruits

Scarlet Nexus Meet The Characters

Along with Yuito and Kasane, there are other new recruits to the OSF that will join the fray, Hanabi Ichijo and Nagi Karman. In Scarlet Nexus, characters that go on missions with the protagonists, including any new recruits, are able to support the player in combat. With the upcoming anime adaptation for Scarlet Nexus, it will interesting to see the rapport between all the new OSF recruits more in-depth.

Hanabi Ichijo

Hardworking, caring, and driven, Hanabi just so happens to be a childhood friend of Yuito’s. She was scouted by the OSF themselves, and has a clear sense of justice. Hanabi has the power of pyrokinesis, and uses a staff to control her attacks. There have been some new videos for Scarlet Nexus that showed off Kasane enhancing her attacks with Hanabi’s pyrokinesis.

Nagi Karman

After joining the OSF, he became Yuito’s friend during training. Even though he joined the OSF to help people, Nagi also wants some recognition for it. He has the power of aerokinesis, and uses it in tandem with his chakrams to fight.

Scarlet Nexus’ OSF Leaders and Veterans

Pictured left to right are: Luka Travers, Shiden Ritter, Fubuki Spring, Naomi Randall, Tsugumi Nazar, Kyoka Eden, Kagero Donne, and Arashi Spring.

Some veteran OSF members have been serving for decades. All OSF psionics have to consume an age-halting serum in order to keep everyone battle-ready for longer stretches of time. There have been several OSF characters revealed, most of which appeared in the Scarlet Nexus game opening animation. Some are regular soldiers, some leadership, and there are a few ultra-powerful Septentrion psionics as well.

Luka Travers

Luka is a high-ranking officer in the OSF, having served for 22 years. Unfortunately, the serum given to Luka stopped his aging at a younger point, leaving him with a weaker body. He trains each day to make his body stronger, but he is still one of the more powerful psionics in the Septentrion. His power is teleportation.

Shiden Ritter

Due to a complicated relationship with his old commander, Shiden got transferred to a team with Kasane. He has been with OSF for 14 years, and has developed a strong sense of pride, only really respecting the strong. His electrokinesis abilites empower his batons in battle.

Fubuki Spring

Another powerful Septentrion member, Fubuki uses cryokinesis to keep an edge in battle as one of the OSF commanders. After 27 years of service, Fubuki is extremely trusted.

Naomi Randall

Kasane’s older adoptive sister, Naomi, is a 2nd Lieutenant in the OSF. Her precognition abilities help teams prepare ahead of time. With Scarlet Nexus being an action-JRPG, it will be interesting to see how this comes into play.

Tsugumi Nazar

She may be shy, but Tsugumi is always composed in battle with her clairvoyance. She has served in the OSF for 12 years, but in her free time she likes gardening.

Kyoka Eden

The OSF Major, Kyoka uses both a crossbow and her duplication abilities to succeed in battles. After serving for 29 years, she is kind, but serious when danger approaches.

Kagero Donne

Kagero was scouted as an adult, and is secretive about his past even after serving for 12 years. Currently a Corporal in the OSF, he uses knives and invisibility.

Arashi Spring

Fubuki’s older sister, Arashi is the public face of the OSF and adored by many fans. Off-camera though, she slacks off. Arashi has used a chainsaw weapon with her hypervelocity ability during her 29 years in the OSF.

It is already clear that Scarlet Nexus will have an expansive cast of characters. Bandai Namco is confirmed for E3, so even more characters and OSF recruits may be revealed soon. In any case, players only have to wait a few more weeks to experience an exciting “brainpunk” adventure in Scarlet Nexus.

Scarlet Nexus releases for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on June 25, 2021.
