Scarlett Johansson Defends Woody Allen In New Interview

Scarlett Johansson publicly defends Woody Allen during a new interview. In August 1992, Allen was accused of sexually harassing adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, who was 7-years old at the time of the alleged incident. Following investigations by the Connecticut State Attorney’s office and the New York Department of Social Services, no criminal charges against Allen were filed, but the serious allegations have remained a point of contention over the last several decades. In the wake of the Me Too and Time’s Up movements, the accusations against Allen have re-emerged.

Over the past couple of years, a number of actors and actresses who worked with Allen in the past expressed regret for collaborating with him. Timothée Chalamet, who starred in Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York, donated his salary from the film to multiple charities, including #TimesUp. And though it seems like most of Hollywood has turned its back against Allen, the Oscar-winning filmmaker still has some supporters, such as Alec Baldwin (who’s appeared in three of Allen’s films). Johansson also considers herself among those ranks.

In an interview with THR, Johansson, who starred in Allen vehicles like Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, was asked for her thoughts on the Allen allegations and if that would prevent her from working with him again:

“How do I feel about Woody Allen? I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime. I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. I have been very direct with him, and he’s very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.”

These become the latest in an ever-growing string of problematic statements made by Johansson in recent years. The actress has made headlines in the past for various casting controversies involving her projects, including Ghost in the Shell and Rub & Tug. In the case of the latter, the backlash was so intense, Johansson vacated the role of transgender kingpin Dante “Tex” Gill, and now Rub & Tug may never happen. Only a couple of months ago, Johansson commented on these issues, saying she should be free to play whoever she wants (though she later clarified this stance in a followup). While Johansson’s honesty in interviews can be appreciated (to an extent), there’s no denying she has made a habit of landing herself in hot water by going against the grain on various topics.

As for Allen, his deal with Amazon was terminated in the wake of Time’s Up, leaving A Rainy Day in New York without a U.S. distributor. Earlier this year, the director released a trailer for the film ahead of its premiere in Europe and South Africa this fall (no domestic release date has been set). He is also planning to shoot a new film in Spain, though there isn’t much information known beyond that.
