One devoted Schitt’s Creek fan has recreated the famous Rosebud Motel. The Canadian sitcom, co-created by father-son duo Dan and Eugene Levy in 2015, is named after the simple small town the show takes place in. The narrative follows the Rose family as they lose all of their wealth and valuable possessions in the series pilot, leaving them with one last asset; a rundown motel in the middle of nowhere. Audiences watch along as the Roses struggle to find their place in a world that is completely foreign to them, and as one could predict, shenanigans ensue.

In the show’s earlier days, it saw moderate success in terms of viewership. This success only ‘rose’ over time with the series being added to Netflix in 2017, giving it a platform that allowed an even larger audience to get to know the zany character’s in the town of Schitt’s Creek. Once the show wrapped in 2020 it had amassed a cult following, as many tuned into the sitcom for laughs and comfort during the long lockdown brought on by the pandemic. Viewers had more free time to get creative, and took to the internet to share theories and fan art online. Some of these creative endeavors even ended up being noticed by the show’s cast and crew.

Richard Knowles, hailing from Seatle’s Queen Anne neighborhood, is the craftsman of a passion project so extravagant that even the official Schitt’s Creek Instagram account took notice. In front of Knowle’s home sits a show-accurate miniature recreation of the Schitt’s Creek’s Rosebud Motel for all passersby to marvel at. After going viral for his tribute to the show last December, Knowles brought back this creation for a second year in a row, adding more details. The entire model was measured, built, and painted by Knowles and a few of his unnamed friends (save for a few tiny chairs and a mailbox). When asked about the hours he’s invested in this project, Knowle’s told a local interviewer from King 5 that the pursuit had taken between 70-80 hours total so far. An impressive feat, considering Knowles also has a job as a card dealer at a casino.

With the Schitt’s Creek Instagram giving Knowles’ recreation of the motel an official endorsement last December, foot-traffic has only increased. This is unsurprising given the enthusiastic caption that encouraged fans of the show to stop by the sidewalk artwork, take photos, and post them to the hashtag #rosebudseattle. Knowle’s commented that around 200 groups have already shown up since the beginning of December, and even his own neighbors asked when they could expect to see the Rosebud Motel before he had put it back on display. This is not his only crafty recreation however, as he has also been known to set up a recreation of the Bate’s Motel from the movie, Psycho, during the Halloween season.

With Schitt’s Creek taking home seven primetime awards and nine Emmy’s last year, it makes sense that so many people find Knowles’ recreation something to get excited about. While the last year has been a heavy time for many people around the world, it’s the little things that bring joy and laughter to a community. By dedicating so much of his free time to building this miniature, Knowles has brought a lot of smiles to his local community, and perhaps even more to the community of Schitt’s Creek enthusiasts he’s connected with online. It’s safe to say that this local creative card dealer has solidified his place as a local legend in Queen Anne.
