Schitt’s Creek: The 5 Most Annoying Things David Ever Did (& 5 Sweetest)

David Rose is definitely one of the sweetest characters by the end of Schitt’s Creek – but he can be incredibly annoying along the way!

Anyone who has seen even a few episodes of Schitt’s Creek can attest that it’s one of the sweetest shows out there, with characters that audiences grow to love and to enjoy spending time with. David Rose is, of course, one of the primary protagonists, and in the hands of Dan Levy he emerges as a fascinating and complicated person (who sometimes doesn’t make a lot of sense). David is one of those people who is quite capable of sweet, touching gestures.

At the same time, there are more than a few times where we can be very annoying, straining the patience of even the people who love him dearly.

10 Annoying: Made Patrick Think He Was Still Mad At Him When He Wasn’t

Sometimes, David has some questionable judgment. At one point, for example, he allowed Patrick to believe that he was still mad at him, simply so that he could get some more presents from him. Given how seriously Patrick clearly took his apology attempt, one can’t help but wonder why in the world David thought it would be a good idea, or very nice, to exploit his new boyfriend’s sensitivity and good faith effort to repair the damage he’d done.

9 Sweetest: Reassured Stevie At Her Aunt’s Funeral She Wasn’t Wasting Her Life

While David and Patrick are one of the best couples, and while their relationship becomes an essential part of the show, it’s also true that David has a profound bond with Stevie. Their friendship is one of the key sources of stability for both of them (even if some might argue that they aren’t real friends), and it’s incredibly sweet when David tells her that she’s not wasting her life. Given how prone Stevie is to second-guessing herself and her ambitions in life, and given how uncomfortable David can be with feelings, it says a lot about him that he took the effort to comfort her in such a way.

8 Annoying: Freaking Out About Patrick’s Ex

Though things start off pretty good for Patrick and David, the arrival of Patrick’s ex throws a big wrench into the works, particularly when it’s revealed that she happens to be a woman. David being David, he absolutely freaks out and begins to push Patrick away. While he had a right to be upset, of course – especially considering his own troubled emotional history – he could probably have handled things a little better rather than just assuming that Patrick was a bad person for not telling him about it beforehand.

7 Sweetest: His Actions On The Hike

While they make a great couple, it’s also true that David and Patrick are very different in some important ways, particularly in their approach to the outdoors. Thus, when Patrick invites David on a hike, he acts like a complete doofus the whole time, complaining about literally everything. This is quite insensitive of him, particularly when it’s later revealed that Patrick brought him to this special place in the wild in order to propose to him.

However, he’s surprisingly sweet in the end, when Patrick gets injured, and David takes care of him, carries him to the top, helps him set up, and basically turns into a loving partner.

6 Annoying: Kissing Ted

One of the most refreshing things about the relationship between David and Patrick is that there are, with some exceptions, few threats to their relationship from outside. One important incident, however, does cause Patrick to feel some jealousy, and that’s when Ted kisses David during a drunken game of spin the bottle. It wouldn’t be so bad if David hadn’t clearly enjoyed it, and it’s one of the times where David is more than a little insensitive to Patrick’s emotional needs.

5 Sweetest: Told Patrick He Loved Him

It quickly becomes very clear on this show that David is, as he later puts it, “damaged goods.” So many people have exploited him and been false friends that he finds it very difficult to trust others. Thus, it’s a big deal when Patrick tells him he loves him and, after some soul-searching, he says it in return. It’s a beautiful moment, because it shows that David has, finally, come to accept that someone cares about him and that it’s okay for him to care in return.

4 Annoying: Sent Patrick On A Date With Someone Else

When David sees a handsome young person flirting with Patrick in the store, he decides that he’ll send Patrick on a date with him, just so that he can see what it’s like to be with other men. As Alexis makes very clear to him, however, this is a stupid thing to do, in no small part because they didn’t set any ground rules.

Aside from that, though, it’s just really annoying to see David be so willing to send this new love of his out into the world with another man.

3 Sweetest: Played Baseball For Patrick

It’s probably an understatement to say that David doesn’t exactly enjoy sports. In fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone being worse at sports than he is. However, he does ultimately play baseball for Patrick and, in fact, proves pivotal to the team winning the game. It’s a very sweet little moment, a reminder that both of them are willing to put the work into this relationship to make sure that it works for both of them.

2 Annoying: Accepted The Happy Ending Massage

There’s much to love about the finale of the show, but it has to be said that there are a few times where David has some annoying lapses of judgment. Most egregiously, he allows himself to get a “happy ending” from the guy that David hires to give him a massage. While there’s some good reason for him to think that Patrick intended this, surely David would have realized that Patrick of all people would never have done this. To be fair, though, the whole sequence is part of what makes David such a hilarious character.

1 Sweetest: (Maybe) Bought The House For Patrick

As the series nears its conclusion, David begins to think about moving back to New York City, and at first he assumes that Patrick will go with him. However, once he realizes that Patrick already had his eye on that house for them to build their life in, he goes ahead and puts in an offer (although it’s clear he isn’t sure he actually bought it), reckoning that they can find true happiness and contentment there in Schitt’s Creek. It’s a beautiful and heartwarming moment, and it’s evidence that David has truly grown as a character.
