Scoob! Is one of those films that does a great deal to rejuvenate the Hanna-Barbera brand. These are characters, after all, that have charmed children of all ages for several decades, and this film shows why they continue to be popular. While, obviously, Scooby and the gang are the most important things about this new film, there are quite a few Easter eggs scattered throughout the entire film that give it an added layer of pleasure for those who know their Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

From Magilla to Gorilla and Penelope Pitstop, there are numerous references to some of the most popular Saturday morning cartoon characters.

10 A Reference To Casey Kasem

Though Casey Kasem was most famous for being the man who voiced Shaggy for numerous films and television series—and, of course, for being a disc jockey—he also appeared in a number of other Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Though he, unfortunately, passed away several years before this film was made, there is an homage to him in a place named Casey’s Creations. It’s a subtle way to honor one of the most iconic voices in animation.

9 An Homage To William Hanna And Joseph Barbera

When it comes to animation, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera are truly giants in the field. Through numerous decades in the business, they were able to bring countless hours of joy to numerous generations of children. How fitting, then, that this film would include an homage to their legendary genius in the form of a barbershop and a pizza place. One can’t help but think that the two great animators would have found this amusing.

8 The Montage And The Original Series

Anyone who has seen the original series starring Scooby-Doo knows that the intrepid—if cowardly—Great Dane and his human companions had numerous adventures unmasking evildoers and thwarting crime. This film has a great call-back to those adventures with a montage that is clearly indebted to the earlier series.

It says something about the longevity of the original series and its influence on subsequent iterations of the characters that it would still be in use so many years after its original airing.

7 A Callback To Penelope Pitstop

Penelope Pitstop is one of those characters that hasn’t quite achieved the same canonical status as some of the others that were created by Hanna-Barbera. However, she was in two series made by them, one in which she is one of a number of “wacky racers,” and the other in which she is the star, in which she is pitted against the nefarious Hooded Claw. This film contains a reference to her in the form of a billboard with her last name on it.

6 Peeble’s Pet Shop

One of the most brilliant things about Hanna-Barbera is how they were so consistently able to create new characters and new scenarios. In fact, there were times when their imagination seemed almost inexhaustible. One of those characters was Magilla Gorilla, another entity who hasn’t quite achieved canonical status. For the keen-eyed observer, however—and for the ardent devotee of Saturday morning cartoons—this film contains a Peeble’s Pet Shop, the home of Magilla himself.

5 The Characters Of Blue Falcon And Dynomutt

Blue Falcon and Dynomutt are two Hanna-Barbera characters who have managed to have quite the shelf-life. In addition to having their own show in the 1970s, they have also appeared in another film with Scooby-Doo. It’s not every character, after all, that can boast of having appeared in so many different iterations of the same franchise.

Thankfully, their appearance in this animated film doesn’t indulge in quite the same sort of silliness that was common in some of Hanna-Barbera’s lesser efforts.

4 Hong Kong Phooey Decal

One of the best things about this film is that it manages to provide some Hanna-Barbera deep cuts. It’s rather doubtful, after all, that many people would recognize the character of Hong Kong Phooey, who appears in a decal. For those who grew up in the 1970s—and, to a lesser extent, the 1980s—the character was a very familiar one. He would later experience a bit of a resurgence when he made appearances on Cartoon Network.

3 Another Reference To The Original Series At The End Of The Film

Though this new film takes some liberties with the mythology as it was established in the original series, it still clearly wants the viewer to know that it recognizes its place and how much it owes to the earlier iterations of the characters. Thus, near the end of the film, there is a scene in which the various characters are gathered around a laptop in a layout that very much echoes a similar blocking in the original series.

2 The Stuffed Yankee Doodle Pigeon

The main villain of this film is Dick Dastardly. While he is very sinister in this iteration, he actually appeared in several other series, including one in which he pursues a patriotic pigeon named—what else?—Yankee Doodle Pigeon. Of course, he always managed to get the better of Dick Dastardly; he was the hero, after all. This film’s homage to him, however, is a bit on the sinister side, since all the audience sees is a stuffed bird.

1 Captain Caveman

Captain Caveman is one of the stranger Hanna-Barbera creations, both in his appearance and in his behavior. On the bright side, he was voiced by Mel Blanc, one of the most prolific and talented voice actors to have ever graced animation. In this film, he is voiced by the tremendously charismatic Tracy Morgan, who brings his own charms to the role. It remains to be seen whether Captain Caveman will be one of the characters who gets his own film.
