Velma is a major part of the Scooby-Doo crew but there are quite a few things about her character that make no sense.

The Scooby Doo gang has been around long enough to influence childhood for multiple generations of viewers. Most people under the age of 50 can remember sitting down to watch the popular cartoon as a kid. Scooby-Doo was created in 1969 and his popularity has continued into the current year. There have been a lot of different adaptations of the characters and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

While all of the characters bring something unique to the show, Velma is a key team leader. Her iconic orange turtleneck and thick-framed glasses are easily recognizable and people often dress up as the geekiest member of the Mystery Gang for Halloween. She was inspired by the character Zelda Gildroy from the sitcom The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis, and though the two characters aren’t exactly alike, they look similar and are both extremely smart. Velma’s had various incarnations since her first appearance, but she’s always been portrayed as an incredibly smart young woman who loves science and solving mysteries.

18 She Always Loses Her Glasses

The first thing many people think of when they hear Velma’s name is her dark-rimmed glasses that she has a tendency to lose.

In each episode, the character inevitably drops them and says something along the lines of, “My glasses! I can’t find my glasses!” before either another member of the gang or the criminal they’re chasing picks them up for her. This line is quoted by fans of the show and most people recognize where it’s from.

At some point, it would seem logical that she would find a way to keep them on her head, whether she attaches a string to them or simply holds onto them while she’s running. Contact lenses are also a safer bet when chasing monsters and criminals.

17 She Loves Being In Danger

Most young women don’t enjoy being surrounded by criminals and monsters. They typically have nightmares about being chased and avoid dangerous situations as much as possible. Velma, however, does the opposite.

She loves being in danger. If there’s something suspicious going on, she’s the first one to suggest checking it out. While Shaggy and Scooby react like most people would, wanting to get as far away from scary monsters as possible, she always convinces everyone to stay.

Most young women would choose a different hobby, like photography or playing a sport, but solving mysteries is Velma’s favorite way to spend her free time. While it’s not the most understandable pastime, she does happen to be good at it.

While Velma’s over-sized orange turtleneck, red skirt, and knee high socks have certainly become iconic, they aren’t exactly the most fashionable choices.

The way someone dresses certainly isn’t everything, but Velma’s outfit is fairly questionable. For one, she’s constantly losing her bulky glasses, but hasn’t considered a more practical choice like contact lenses. A skirt and heels also doesn’t seem like the best combination for running from bad guys.

As the fashionable one of the crew, Daphne could help Velma update her look a bit, though Daphne doesn’t wear the best clothes for solving mysteries, either. Velma doesn’t need to completely change her look, but she may want to consider some more practical fashion options.

The Mystery Gang is definitely in need of strong leadership. With so many young people working together, they need to make sure they’re all heading in the same direction on a case. While Velma provides some much-needed clarity, she isn’t always the nicest about it.

She can be quite condescending to her friends. While she’s obviously the smartest of the group, she doesn’t always need to act like she’s better than everyone else. Velma has a tendency to treat other members, particularly Shaggy and Scooby, like they are dumb.

Each member of the Mystery Gang brings something unique to the table and without all of them, their dynamic and ability to solve problems would be completely different.

15 Her Intense Makeover

Velma has always been a bit awkward, geeky, and extremely smart. Each of those aspects is essential to her character. That’s why when she had a flirty transformation in the live action movie, fans were a bit confused.

Daphne has traditionally been the fashionable, flirty, and desirable woman in the group. When Velma was nervous about the guy she liked, Daphne helped give her a makeover. While Velma looked good, she simply wasn’t the Velma fans knew and loved anymore. She couldn’t even walk right in her new shoes.

Velma has always rocked her geeky look and been confident about who she is, so changing herself so a guy would like her didn’t make much sense.

In the 90s, there was a crossover between Scooby Doo and Johnny Bravo on Cartoon Network. Johnny’s car breaks down and the Mystery Gang gives him a lift, and they end up helping him investigate his Aunt’s haunted mansion.

While Johnny is infatuated with Daphne, Velma has her eyes on Johnny. While Johnny certainly is a good-looking guy, Velma’s crush on him makes no sense. He’s not very bright and is quite full of himself. He simply doesn’t act like Velma’s typical type.

Daphne rejects him and Velma believes it’s her chance, but their romance simply wasn’t in the cards. It’s probably for the best because Velma would have grown bored with him. She needs someone who can keep up with her wit and intelligence, and Johnny isn’t it.

13 Her Relationship With Daphne

While it has never been confirmed, fans have speculated about a romantic relationship between Daphne and Velma for years. There have been some tense moments between the two, and while some believe they truly are just friends, others think there is something more.

There have been rumors about the pair for decades. They’ve been shown getting into bed together, though it wasn’t meant to insinuate anything other than a platonic relationship. Some of these theories were proven right when it was said that Velma and Daphne kissed in the live action but the scene was cut.

The kiss was during the body-switching scene and was originally how they attempted to get their souls back into the correct body. Regardless, the dynamic between Daphne and Velma is confusing at best.

12 She’s Wise Beyond Her Years

Velma is so wise, it’s easy for people to forget how young she really is. The gang has been portrayed as both teenagers and young adults, but neither are too old.

She is often in charge of the Mystery Gang and makes major decisions in life-threatening situations. Velma also deals with authority figures like detectives and police officers. For someone as young as she is, she makes a lot of adult decisions that would freak most young people out.

The character is rarely shown doing normal things for a young woman her age. It doesn’t always make sense that she’s as wise and mature as she is when dealing with monsters and ghosts, but she’s always composed.

11 She’s A Big Ice Hockey Fan

The last thing most fans would think goes with Velma is ice hockey. Sports seem like they would be so far off the bookworms radar. Despite that, she’s a major hockey fan and geeks out about the sport regularly.

Velma is so passionate about the sport that she follows the United States’ national team. She even got to play hockey with them. In an episode where the Mystery Gang goes to an international hockey tournament in Moscow, they have to help solve a mystery involving the team, resulting in her taking part in a match.

Despite working in a bookstore and solving mysteries, Velma’s true passion is ice hockey. It doesn’t make much sense, but it’s a part of who she is.

10 Her Fear Of Clowns

Velma seems like she isn’t afraid of anything. She boldly enters dangerous situations and purposefully chases monsters. That’s why her deep fear of clowns is a bit confusing.

This fear stems from a birthday party when she was a little girl, shown in an episode of What’s New Scooby Doo? The clown hired to perform at her party decided it would be a good idea to throw Velma’s new encyclopedias into a wood chipper. The major book-worm was traumatized to see her books thrown away like that.

Admittedly, menacing clowns unsettle most people. It just seems like Velma would be practically fearless after all her encounters with ghouls and monsters during her time with the Mystery Gang.

9 Her Time As A Villain

Velma has solved many mysteries over the years. When she sets her mind to it, she can accomplish anything. While she typically uses that power for good, she has been a villain before.

In the second season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, she dresses up as a villain, though her motive isn’t quite as evil as most bad guy’s motives are. She only did it to encourage the Mystery Gang to get back together after a major falling out.

It’s still confusing to see one of the most important members of the gang dressing up as one of the villains they have vowed to take down, even if she did it to try and help.

8 She’s Weirdly Strong

Velma is very tiny. While her height has varied depending on the depiction, she’s always the shortest member of the gang. Despite that, she seems to be the strongest.

She’s quite literally carried every member of the Mystery Gang while running away from a masked villain. In What’s New, Scooby Doo?, she was able to lift two massive female wrestlers at once, each in one hand, and throw them through the air in a move she called the “Flying Dinkley.”

While adrenaline can cause humans to attempt incredible feats and lift heavy objects, it seems a little unreasonable that Velma can carry people the way she does all the time as a short, young woman.

7 Her Relationship With Shaggy

While Freddie and Daphne are the staple romantic pairing of the group in Scooby Doo, there have been other relationships among the group. Velma and Shaggy have had an on-again, off-again relationship depending on the Scooby Doo portrayal.

Their dynamic always has people wondering whether they are a couple or not. In most incarnations, the two are really good friends with hints of something more. In others, Velma and Shaggy are boyfriend and girlfriend.

It can be hard to keep up with the pair, but it can be assumed there are always vibes between the two. The most important relationship to Shaggy, however, is his companionship with Scooby, and Velma’s first love is solving mysteries.

6 Her Interest In Sam Winchester

Fans of Supernatural were really excited when it crossed over with Scooby Doo in season thirteen of the CW show. In the episode, Velma has a massive crush on Sam, but fans were confused by the way she acted around him.

Velma is the brains of the group and doesn’t typically act all googly-eyed for anyone. Not only was her flirting with Sam out of character, but their age difference is also quite alarming. Sam is mean to be in his thirties, while Velma is typically a teenager. She could possibly be a college student, but the dynamic is still strange.

Her interest in Sam just isn’t normal for her character. She is typically more composed than that.

5 Fred Regularly In Charge When Velma Is Clearly The Smartest

Despite the fact that Velma is the most intelligent member of the Mystery Gang, Fred always seems to be the one in charge. Fred is always giving orders and planning traps, but those traps inevitably go wrong.

Velma is typically the one to figure out the mystery before anyone else and unmask the villain at the end of the episode. While Fred does have his moments, Velma is the brains behind the operation.

Instead of having Fred plan a trap halfway through the episode that inevitably goes wrong, they could listen to Velma and avoid the whole mess. The two battle for leadership of the gang, and one is clearly the better choice than the other.

4 She Lacks Social Skills

For someone so intelligent, Velma certainly lacks social skills. She tends to be condescending to her friends, awkward around her crushes, and speak out of turn to authority figures.

When she likes a guy, she completely panics and has no idea how to act around him. In the live action film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, she freaks out when Patrick is interested in her to the point she crawls and hides from him.

In another episode, Scooby is missing and Velma tries to take his place beside Shaggy. She acts like she believes Scooby would, and though it’s meant to be endearing, it comes off as incredibly awkward. You would think Velma would be smart enough to realize it.

3 Her Backstory Changes

Velma’s origin story has never been very clear. Her background changes depending on which Scooby Doo series one is referring to. Her meeting of Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby varies.

In the original series, Velma and the rest of the gang go to the same high school. In some of the movies, however, it is said she went to a separate high school than everyone else. Despite which school she attended, she managed to join the Mystery Gang and her iconic look remains fairly the same, as well as her personality. That is what really matters.

It’s just difficult to keep her background straight with all the different versions of her character out there.

2 Her Age Is Unclear

Along with her exact origin story, Velma’s age remains unclear. In some versions of Scooby Doo she’s in high school and in others she is a young adult, possibly attending college.

In the original series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, Velma is only 15 years old, which is where the term “meddling kids” come from. Fred, Shaggy, and Daphne weren’t much older than her. In later versions, like Scooby Doo Zombie Island or What’s New, Scooby Doo?, they seem more like they’re in their twenties.

It’s hard to keep track of how old she is in each incarnation, but it is safe to assume she’s somewhere between being a teenager or being in her early twenties.

1 She Solves Clues Too Quickly

While the Mystery Gang has always been weirdly good at solving mysteries for people so young, Velma, in particular, has an intelligence that is almost unimaginable.

She is able to figure out clues way too quickly. No fifteen year old should be able to add up things so quickly to catch an incredibly sneaky bad guy. The other members are helpful, but without Velma’s crazy investigative skills, they wouldn’t solve half of their cases.

While it’s clear she is smart, it’s hard to believe she’s that smart. And if she really is that smart, her talents are being wasted. She should be working for an important organization like NASA, not solving little mysteries in small towns.
