ScoobyDoo 5 Reasons The LiveAction Movies Proved To Be Pretty Good (& 5 Why Theyre Terrible)

Scooby-Doo is, of course, one of (if not the) most famous animated dogs in the history of television and film, but in many ways, that’s not at all surprising. He’s been the star of a dizzying array of films and television series, appearing in every decade since the 1960s. Starting in the early 2000s, however, he also started to appear in a number of live-action films.

While it has to be said that some of these weren’t always the peak of great filmmaking, there are some surprisingly good moments in even the most mediocre of the life-action films.

10 Pretty Good: The Casting In Scooby-Doo

Though the film Scooby-Doo isn’t necessarily a great film in its entirety, it has to be said that the casting is surprisingly spot-on. From the performance of Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred to Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, each of the actors seems to slide very nicely into their roles.

The true MVP of the actors, however, has to be Matthew Lillard, who simply seems to embody Shaggy Rogers (he would later go on to voice the character in a number of animated series and films).

9 Terrible: The Inclusion of Scrappy

Since the moment that he appeared in the cartoons several decades ago, Scrappy-Doo has proven to be a tremendously divisive figure. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the filmmakers decided to include him in this film as well, and it has to be said that it’s one of the worst decisions they could have made.

It doesn’t help matters that his inclusion seems like an add-on and involves one of the film’s more disgusting bits of humor.

8 Pretty Good: The Animation In Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed

Hollywood is one of those institutions that can’t seem to resist giving a sequel to even the most mediocre of films, and Scooby-Doo is no exception. The sequel at least reunites the cast from the first film.

Though the story in this film is a bit more incoherent than in its predecessor, it has to be said that the animation is significantly improved. Whatever the film’s other flaws, it can’t be denied that in many ways it’s a feast for the eyes.

7 Terrible: The Plot In Monsters Unleashed

On the flip side, Monsters Unleashed has a plot that doesn’t really make a lot of sense. That, ultimately, is the problem with a sequel like this. While the first film could get away with a bit of silliness and sloppiness, at this point it starts to wear a little thin.

While some might enjoy the rather childish sense of humor that permeates the film, most others will probably find it irritating at about the halfway mark.

6 Pretty Good: The Casting In The Mystery Begins

The Mystery Begins is one of the live-action films that has sort of flown under the radar. While it does have its flaws, the cast is incredibly charming. In large part, this has to do with the fact that they are somewhat younger than the earlier films, so there’s a freshness to them that’s sometimes lacking in other entries.

This makes sense since the movie is largely about the events that led up to the gang joining together to solve mysteries.

5 Terrible: The Plot Of Mystery Begins

As charming as the cast is in Mystery Begins is, the rest of the film is rather weak in terms of its narrative. It essentially revolves around the local high school and a precious stamp, which is just about as ridiculous as it sounds.

What’s more, the animation used to bring the ghosts to life is, even by the standards of television movies, truly so bad that it’s distracting. Scooby-Doo definitely deserves better.

4 Pretty Good: Everything About Curse Of The Lake Monster

Following up on The Mystery Begins, the powers that be commissioned a sequel, entitled Curse of the Lake Monster. It features the same cast as the previous film, so that is definitely a mark in its favor.

While the animation still looks a bit clumsy and amateurish at times–a sign, no doubt, of its being broadcast on television–the story overall is a much stronger and more compelling one than in its predecessor.

3 Terrible: The Humor In Scooby-Doo

The first live-action version of Scooby-Doo was notable for many things, and one of those was an attempt to draw in adult (or at least young adult) viewers who might not have the sentimental attachment to the franchise as their elders.

Unfortunately, this means that they sometimes lean too much on the type of humor one associates with teen films which is, it has to be said, a very odd (perhaps even a bad) fit with the Scooby-Doo ethos.

2 Pretty Good: Making Velma And Daphne The Stars Of Their Own Movie

Daphne and Velma is another of the entries in the Scooby-Doo franchise that has largely managed to fly under the radar. At the most basic level, it’s rather exciting to see these two characters finally get a movie that’s all about them.

Even more than that, though, is the fact that both actresses manage to make their own marks on these canonical characters while also staying true to the basic facts of who they are in the mythology.

1 Terrible: The Body Swap In Scooby-Doo

You know that the story being told is rather weak when it starts to lean too heavily on the body swap gimmick (in which the soul of one person is put in the body of another).

Unfortunately, that’s just what happens in Scooby-Doo. While this might be excusable, and even expected, in a purely animated film, to see it take place in a live-action is more than a little disturbing, and it is definitely one of the weakest parts of the entire film.
