Scream 2022 Trailer Filled With Intentional Misdirection For Whodunit

The newly-released trailer for 2022’s Scream is filled with plenty of misdirects, according to co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. After taking several years off on the big screen, the Scream franchise will return in January with another blood-curdling installment. Simply titled Scream, this new movie will bring viewers back to Woodsboro right as another Ghostface killer unearths the town’s deadly past. Though there are plenty of new characters lining up as unwitting victims, Scream will also feature returning players Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox).

With the spookiest season of the year officially in full swing, fans were treated to the very first trailer for Scream earlier this week. It featured everything fans have come to appreciate about the franchise, from that terrifying first kill (with Jenna Ortega taking Drew Barrymore’s role for this one) to a crowd-pleasing Sidney moment. Almost immediately, those online began scouring the Scream trailer for clues about what lies ahead. However, that investigation might not yield many results based on new comments from the directors.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett responded to the idea that the Scream trailer holds a lot of purposeful misdirects. Fans shouldn’t be surprised to hear that yes, this week’s trailer was meant to deceive them. “I can say that every corner of this movie, during the making of it, we have been very aware how to service fans, where the misdirects are happening, and the path that we want to lead people down. Obviously, without spoiling the movie, we can certainly say that the trailer is definitely doing that dance,” Gillett said. Bettinelli-Olpin added:

“That is a very safe assumption. This was a hard trailer for [marketing] to put together, and I think one of the things we’re happy with is that anything that you might think is a spoiler in this, there’s a good chance you’re wrong. There are misdirects within the movie. There are misdirects within the trailer. For us, that’s just the fun of the whole thing to make this a big whodunnit. Spoilers suck, but the fun as fans is to talk about who might be the killer. Then to go through it forensically to try and find out and see if you can win the game, basically.”

Since this is the fifth Scream movie and just one of countless other slashers, audiences have a pretty good nose for sniffing out clues. These days, it’s much harder to come up with an original scare, though Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin are certainly trying to with the 2022 Scream. Not only did it take longer than usual to cut the trailer because of spoilers, but the directors came up with multiple versions of Scream to ensure the killer’s real identity wouldn’t get out. Too often, trailers will show audiences a bit too much of the movie they’re trying to sell; however, with Scream, what was shown shouldn’t be taken at face value.

This means that some of the shots fans might’ve guessed at already might not be telling the whole picture. For example, one particularly telling moment sees Gale in distress and running towards someone, only to be held back. Some fans wondered if that means Dewey, Gale’s on-and-off love, has died. However, now knowing Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s desire to misdirect the audience, that could’ve been put in just to throw fans off. Undoubtedly, the theorizing and speculating will continue up until Scream arrives in theaters. That just means this has the making of a pretty great whodunit, in which case, the directors succeeded in what they set out to do.
