The Scream characters may have tons of knowledge on horror movies, but that doesn’t mean Sidney Prescott and co. are the smartest people in the genre.

Scream Every Main Character Ranked By Intelligence

Ever since the opening scene when Drew Barrymore’s character realizes a killer is in her home, Scream has been an iconic part of the horror genre. Sidney Prescott’s story always feels relevant as the movie is a classic slasher flick, but it’s also got humor, emotion, and of course, a meta take on horror.

With solid dialogue and impressive acting and direction, it’s no wonder that the Scream franchise has been so popular. But how smart are the main characters in the first film? While some seem to have a solid head on their shoulders, others make some pretty poor decisions.

10 Cotton Weary

For a while, it seems like Cotton Weary is one of the Ghostface killers, but as time goes on, it becomes clear that Liev Schreiber’s character is basically just a jerk.

Cotton doesn’t seem like a very intelligent person. He thinks that being famous is more important than anything else, and he has a creepy air around him.

9 Casey Becker

Casey Becker seems like a sweet person who has been put in a terrible situation. She’s famous for being the first person killed in Scream (and for the truly gruesome way that she’s murdered).

While this character knows a lot about horror movies since she loves the genre so much, she can’t get the most important question right, as she messes up who the killer is in Friday the 13th. She also has moments when she seems a bit ditzy.

8 Stu Macher

Matthew Lillard’s character, Stu Macher, definitely isn’t very smart.

Stu isn’t the greatest Scream killer, and he doesn’t seem to have a lot going on upstairs, either. Whether he’s acting silly at school and teasing everyone, or he’s stupid enough to think that he can get away with killing people, Stu doesn’t seem destined for a very intellectual future.

7 Dewey Riley

While Dewey Riley is incredibly kind and caring toward Sidney and his sister Tatum, he’s not the most competent at his job, which ranks him pretty low in terms of smart Scream characters.

Dewey is the kind of cop who can’t solve a puzzle, even if the pieces are right in front of him, and while he tries really hard, he just doesn’t seem to understand the situations that he’s in.

6 Neil Prescott

Sidney’s father Neil doesn’t seem like a particularly smart or particularly dumb character.

He’s not onscreen for enough time for fans to get a feel for his intelligence, but he does get kidnapped by the killers, so he could probably be a little smarter. While not every horror movie character can help the situations that they’re put in, Neil has been dealing with the trauma of losing his wife, and it seems like he would be a little more careful.

5 Tatum Riley

Tatum might not be a “final girl” but she’s a fairly smart teenager. But ultimately, she is the kind of high schooler who thinks that she knows more than she does.

Even though she lives in a small town and probably hasn’t been anywhere or had very many experiences, Tatum has a world-weary attitude and acts like she’s seen it all. She’s innocent and naïve in some ways, though, like the fact that she’s dating Stu and he’s actually one of the killers.

4 Sidney Prescott

Fans are thrilled that Neve Campbell will be in Scream 5 and that’s because the character is such an important part of the franchise. The story began with her, after all.

While Sidney seems very smart, she misses a lot of obvious signs. For example, she doesn’t realize that her boyfriend Billy is the killer and trusts him completely, even though he acts like a jerk and doesn’t respect her. She also sometimes has a bit of a “damsel in distress” vibe even though she does become stronger as the franchise continues.

3 Gale Weathers

Gale Weathers is one of the most intelligent characters in Scream.

While some don’t love this passionate reporter, she’s got a good feel for what makes a compelling broadcast, and she knows that the Woodsboro murders are something worth talking about. She’s also smart enough to put herself in the center of the action and get the story, even becoming a published author as a result of it.

2 Billy Loomis

Skeet Ulrich’s character, Billy Loomis, is one of the two killers in Scream, and for that reason, he seems like he’s very intelligent.

He manages to hide the truth from his own girlfriend and his friends, and no one has any idea that he has been killing people and causing so much pain and suffering.

1 Randy Meeks

Jamie Kennedy’s Scream character, Randy Meeks, is a hilarious horror movie character. He’s also the most intelligent of the bunch.

With a crazy amount of knowledge on the genre of horror, Randy has an answer for everything. He schools the others on how to live through a horror story and he seems like the most important character since he explains the reason why Scream is meta. There were so many horror movies trying to do as well as Scream and that must be because Randy’s intelligent take on the genre is so fascinating.
