Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

2021 proved to be an excellent year in comics as many different publishers from across the globe released some great titles that resonated with readers long after being released. Among the best titles included offerings from Marvel, DC Comics, Vault Comics, BOOM! Studios, and more.

Selecting the best comics of 2021 was a challenge, as there were many great comics that didn’t make our year-end list. However, the comics that were chosen stand above the rest as the best of the year. Here’s our full list.

Barbaric – Vault Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Vault Comics’ strong year was highlighted by the excellent, uber-violent Barbaric by Michael Moreci, Nathan C. Gooden, Addison Duke, Jim Campbell, and Tim Daniel. The elevator pitch should have potential readers immediately interested: A cursed barbarian and his talking axe with a drinking problem star in a violent, expletive-filled fantasy epic. Barbaric never holds back and makes the most out of its R-rated content. It’s bloody spectacular.

Beta Ray Bill – Marvel Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Daniel Warren Johnson has a knack for combining breath-taking action and scale with heartfelt, emotional stories. Beta Ray Bill by Johnson and Mike Spicer continues the trend and might be his best story yet, as it follows Marvel’s worthy hero on a personal quest to find a new weapon and meaning. Each page is filled with jaw-dropping visuals and passion as Johnson proves to be one of comics’ most bombastic and unique voices. The story hits just as hard.

Captain Marvel – Marvel Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Kelly Thompson was Marvel Comics’ MVP in 2021. With a rotating group of artists including Lee Garbett, Jacopo Camagni, and Sergio Davila, Thompson helped create one of Marvel’s best ongoing series that constantly challenged what it meant to be Captain Marvel. Whether Carol Danvers was traveling to a dark alternate future, trying to learn magic, or was battling Vox Supreme, her stories were always entertaining and unpredictable. It was all killer and no filler when it comes to Marvel’s most consistent title, as Captain Marvel’s adventures have never been more enjoyable.

Ninjak – Valiant Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Ninjak represented a risk of sorts for Valiant Comics, as Javier Pulido’s art style is considerably different from anything they ever published with the character before. However, Ninjak’s style, bright colors, and unorthodox panel work made it one of the best-looking books in 2021. The Jeff Parker penned comic was fresh, inventive, and unlike anything else on the shelves. It’s a shame the comic didn’t last longer – but we’re glad it exists.

Teen Titans Academy – DC Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

On paper, Teen Titans Academy might seem like a lot at once. It balances the weight of bringing back many original members of the Teen Titans together, introduces a handful of new characters, and continues a Red X storyline from more than 15 years ago. However, Tim Sheridan, Rafa Sandoval, and Mike Norton have made one of the most fun comics that’s continuously firing at all cylinders. The new characters are interesting and intriguing (Stitch is the best) and seeing the Titans back together feels right. Teen Titans Academy successfully balances multiple crossovers and cameos, too, while always feeling cohesive. It’s pure joy on the comic page.

Eternals – Marvel Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, and Matthew Wilson did the seemingly impossible and completely retooled the iconic Jack Kirby-created characters in a new series that reinvented the Eternals for a modern audience. Eternals works because it immediately forges its own path while staying true to past stories, rewrites the cosmic lore of the Eternals in daringly exciting ways, and smartly makes Thanos a main player in the title. Each issue weaves thousands and even millions of years’ worth of history throughout and never feels overwhelming. It also features a twist that changes what it means to be Eternal, which is mindblowing; it’s pure genius. Eternals is gorgeous, beautifully written, and is the best comic book of 2021.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr – BOOM! Studios

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Without sounding too hyperbolic, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade will be a comic that will be remembered and studied for years to come. The magical five-issue series about the goddess of death being sent to Earth after her services are no longer needed is spellbinding. The comic is beautifully illustrated by Andrade and Ram V’s depth-filled writing has never been more impactful. The themes, lessons, and overall story about life, death, moving on, mortality, need to be read to fully understand what the series achieves in just five issues. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is beautiful in every sense of the word.

Iron Man – Marvel Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Christopher Cantwell, Cafu, Frank D’Armata, and Angel Unzueta have combined to write one of Marvel’s most consistently entertaining books. While the main story follows Iron Man (and his unlikely group of heroes) trying to stop Korvac from obtaining the Power Cosmic, what really makes the series so fascinating is the examination of what makes Tony Stark a hero. It takes a deep dive into Stark’s human nature, struggles, trauma, and life, without ever feeling heavy-handed. Plus, Cantwell’s understanding of Iron Man’s history and love for using C-list villains (Frog-Man and Stilt-Man anyone?) makes for an entertaining and often enlightening read.

Poison Ivy: Thorns – DC Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

DC Comics young adult and younger readers offerings have been superb in 2021, and Poison Ivy: Thorns leads the charge. Kody Keplinger and Sara Kipin’s story retells Pamela Isley’s origin, carefully examining the moments that would lead her to become one of Gotham’s most iconic villains. The modern origin – featuring a new LGBTQ+ romance – is perfect for Poison Ivy, and learning more about her upbringing and the secrets of her past makes for one heck of a story. Plus, Kipin’s art is absolutely stellar throughout.

Nightwing – DC Comics

Screen Rants Best Comic Books of 2021

Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, and Adriano Lucas have taken Dick Grayson and his flailing story in recent years and completely righted the ship for the popular hero. Nightwing is a fun, energetic series that shows what makes the hero genuinely great. Paired alongside Barbara Gordon and a cute pup, the relentlessly optimistic storytelling makes for the best ongoing series the character’s ever had. Redondo’s art and Lucas’ colors are pure perfection with a level of care that shows Nightwing is in good hands.

We Live – AfterShock Comics

We Live by Inaki Miranda, Roy Miranda, Dave Sharpe, and Eva de la Cruz was one of comic’s most surprising series in 2021. The story takes place in a future where humans face extinction, but 5,000 children have been chosen to be saved. What makes We Live a stand-out title is the gorgeous art from Miranda and colors by de la Cruz, which are constantly eye-popping. There are some seriously impressive monster and character designs, on top of excellent world-building going on in the book – which makes us glad the miniseries is getting a follow-up next year.
