This crafty girl becomes a successful movie executive at only 15. In fact, it’s not until her cousin George Michael (Michael Cera) accidentally invites Maeby’s colleagues to her 16th birthday that the jig is up. It’s a job well done.

6 Shawkat’s Relatable Portrayal Of A Bad Relationship Goes From Bad To Worse For Dory

Dory’s boyfriend Drew Gardner (John Reynolds) may love her, but he’s far from the ideal romantic partner. Shawkat does an amazing job of showcasing Dory’s sense of feeling closed in by Drew while emphasizing her inability to actually break up with him.

Dory clearly craves adventure and new experiences, but she digs herself even deeper in the hole when she cheats on Drew with a private investigator she meets while looking for Chantal, Keith Powell. Powell, played by Ron Livingston, becomes wrapped up in a bizarre love triangle with Dory and Drew — one that ends with his unfortunate death. It may not be a fairy-tale romance, but it does engage the viewers.

5 Shawkat Knows How To Make Maeby’s Complicated Love Life Comical

For most of Arrested Development, Maeby and George Michael carry on an awkward flirtation. She eventually kisses him in order to shock her oblivious parents.

When the cameras aren’t running, they all rail into each other; when the cameras are turned on, they act like the perfect family. Without Shawkat’s ability to quickly transition from an angry murderer to a confused, victimized daughter, the true depths of Dory wouldn’t be comprehended by audiences.

3 Shawkat Never Lets Audiences Forget Maeby Just Wants A Little Attention From Her Parents

For Maeby, the struggle has always been staying on the radar of her self-obsessed parents. One of the Arrested Development’s longest-running jokes involves Lindsay and Tobias’s propensity for forgetting they have a daughter at all.

When they do think about Maeby, neither possesses any knowledge of where she is or what she’s doing with her life. Dory lies, over and over again, in order to save her reputation and avoid a long prison sentence for the death of Keith Powell. She goes on trial with Drew in season three; while he urges her to tell the truth, she flat out refuses — even emotionally manipulating Drew into following her lead.

As a symbol of her privilege and the corrupt nature of the criminal justice system, Dory is ultimately exonerated of all her charges after giving a tear-filled statement that attests to Shawkat’s superior acting skills. Deep down, though, Dory knows what she did to Keith; she also knows what she did to her noisy neighbor April.

1 Shawkat Emphasizes Maeby’s Next-Level Scamming Skills

Maeby, desperate for attention, also cons her way into the spotlight while acting incapable of committing such acts. Throughout the show, Maeby dons multiple wigs and assumes many identities, which brilliantly requires Shawkat to be acting as a character who is acting.

In the end, though, she always manages to make her scams seem like good deeds. This is also all thanks to Shawkat, who never loses sight of Maeby’s genuine lust for life and inherent curiosity about the world.
