Seinfeld 10 George Schemes (That Hilariously Backfired)

Seinfeld gave us so many wonderful and iconic characters, but perhaps the most enjoyable to watch was George Costanza. Now, George isn’t fun to watch because he’s a lovable character, in fact, he’s a selfish and petty person. But what makes him so entertaining are his constant attempts to improve his life through immoral ways that inevitably blow up in his face.

Whether it’s with his work, relationships or social status, George is always looking for the easy way out. He concocts these ridiculous plans that anyone with common sense would see as ill-advised, but no matter how many times he fails, he always has another scheme up his sleeve. Here are George Costanza’s best schemes that backfired from Seinfeld.

10 The Mickey Scheme

George is not one to let a grudge go and he often finds himself in over his head with schemes of revenge. After getting humiliated and fired by his obnoxious boss, George decides to get back at him by slipping him some drugs at a company cocktail party.

George has Elaine distract the man with some flirtation before drugging his drink. Unfortunately, the boss is so elated to be flirting with a pretty woman like Elaine he is in a good enough mood to give George his job back before downing his drink. We’re not sure exactly what was put in the drink, but George finds himself unemployed yet again.

9 The Human Fund Scheme

It would be an understatement to say George is careful with his money. He will go to great lengths to avoid spending money, especially when it doesn’t immediately benefit him. So when Christmas comes around, George decides instead of giving people gifts, he will be donating money in their name to a charity called the Human Fund.

Of course, the Human Fund doesn’t really exist and it’s just a way for him to avoid buying gifts for people. But George’s greed goes too far when his boss decides to donate a substantial amount to this fraudulent cause, thus exposing George as a liar.

8 The Scott Scheme

George begins dating a girl who happens to have an amazing apartment with velvet furniture and a home entertainment system which he seems to like more than the actual girl. The catch is she also has a male roommate named Scott which doesn’t sit well with George at all.

George decides his new girlfriend must choose between him and Scott and she chooses George. Unfortunately, when Scott moves out, he takes the furniture and home entertainment system with him. George tries to get out of the new committed relationship by suggesting a ménage- à-trois, but she is into the idea, along with Scott.

7 The Lip-Reading Scheme

Seinfeld 10 George Schemes (That Hilariously Backfired)

George is certainly not above exploiting other people for his own personal gain. When Jerry begins dating a deaf woman, George sees her lip-reading skills as a potential for his plans of revenge.

Suspecting that his girlfriend is cheating on him, he has the deaf woman read his girlfriend’s lips from across the room while she talks to her male friend. Unfortunately, the words “sleep” and “sweep” seem very similar when reading lips and George makes some inaccurate accusations as well as exposing his creepy spying tactics.

6 The Jerk Store Scheme

Seinfeld 10 George Schemes (That Hilariously Backfired)

George does not like to let an insult slide, and he tends to be the kind of guy who gets insulted a lot. When George is indulging in some shrimp at a work meeting, one of his colleagues makes the jab “Hey George, the ocean called, they’re running out of shrimp”.

It is only after leaving the office that George comes up with the perfect comeback, “Well, the jerk store called, they’re running out of you”. George tries to recreate the situation to use the comeback and even follows the man to a new job. But when his comeback falls flat, George simply says he slept with the man’s wife. He’s then informed his wife is in a coma.

5 The Parked Car Scheme

Though George is a lazy man, he will go to great lengths to ensure he works as little as possible in his actual job. After leaving his car at work for several days, George’s bosses begin to think he is putting in extra hours and begins considering him for a promotion.

But when George asks Jerry to clean off his car so it doesn’t look suspicious, they get into an accident before returning the car to its parking space. George’s bosses assume he is dead and tell his parents the bad news before giving the promotion to someone else.

4 The Rye Bread Scheme

As much as George is to blame for a lot of his behavior, it’s easy to see where he gets it when you meet his parents. Frank and Estelle Costanza are hot-headed and unusual people, so George is rightfully nervous to have them meet his Susan, his fiancé, and her parents.

After getting annoyed that the rye bread they brought to dinner wasn’t served, the Costanzas take it back out of spite. George tries to replace it before his parents’ petty gesture is discovered, which results in Jerry stealing rye bread from an old woman and George getting caught by Susan and her parents with a loaf of rye bread at the end of a fishing rod.

3 The Disability Scheme

George has shown time and time again that there are no depths he would not sink to. So, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that he would fake a disability to get a new job. After his boss takes sympathy when he sees George with a cane, George milks it for all he has.

It starts with sympathy which lands him the gig, then he gets a private washroom, people begin carrying him around the office, and he even gets a scooter for easier mobility. However, the scheme ends when his boss sees him running down the street carrying his massive scooter.

2 The Marisa Tomei Scheme

Seinfeld 10 George Schemes (That Hilariously Backfired)

For all his faults, some good things tend to fall into George’s lap. Of course, he often quickly finds a way to ruin those opportunities. When George has the opportunity to go out with Marisa Tomei, he jumps at the chance – even though he’s engaged to Susan.

George concocts an overly elaborate lie involving Elaine and her fictional importer-exporter boyfriend which Susan quickly picks apart. After getting punched in the face by Marisa for revealing he’s engaged, he returns home to get punched in the face for lying to Susan.

1 The Vandelay Industries Scheme

Seinfeld 10 George Schemes (That Hilariously Backfired)

George has never had good luck with careers. When he finds himself unemployed yet again, he signs up for unemployment benefits and makes up a fake business he claims to have applied for. He gives the agency Jerry’s phone number and tells him he has to answer the phone as Vandelay Industries, a business that works in latex and was considering George for a salesman position.

Jerry goes along with the scheme well enough. Unfortunately, no one lets Kramer in on the plot. When Jerry is out of the apartment for a moment and George is in the bathroom, Kramer answers the phone and has no idea what Vandelay Industries is.
