Sex Education 5 Best & 5 Worst Episodes So Far (According To IMDb)

With an overall rating of 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb, this British comedy-drama took Netflix by storm in 2019. Sex Education does exactly what its title promises; it takes a microscope to the surprisingly extensive array of issues surrounding sexuality and how these issues are addressed within the school system.

The BAFTA Award-winning series is loved by fans just as much as it is by critics, but for some viewers, the graphic and confrontational content can be a bit much. Thus, here are the five top-rated episodes of the show, and the five lowest-rated, as ranked by viewers on IMDb.

10 BEST: Episode #1.3 (8.4)

As Otis and Maeve’s sex clinic gains momentum at Moordale Secondary, Eric has a little spare time on his hands. When Mr. Hendricks suggests he audition for Swing Band, Eric does. Out of sympathy, Lily votes him in and offers to help him practice.

What she really wants is to have sex with him, until she finds out that he’s gay. Meanwhile, Otis is waiting for Maeve to have an abortion, thinking she’s invited him on a date. The episode also shares the spot with the season 1 finale.

9 WORST: Episode #2.2 (8.0)

In the second episode of season 2, the carnival comes to town and Maeve finally claims her spot in the Moordale Aptitude Scheme. Unfortunately, her peers don’t think she deserves this honor. Tension rises between her and Ola.

Meanwhile, Otis has discovered “The Clock Technique” but it turns out he’s terrible at it. Ola is afraid to tell him, so Lily does. Viv begins tutoring Jackson, and Jean introduces herself to the school by singing “Let’s Talk About Sex.” Mr. Hendricks asks for Otis’s advice regarding dirty talk, and Rahim expresses his interest in Eric.

8 BEST: Episode #2.6 (8.5)

Ola has just broken up with Otis, so he’s determined to prove to her (and Maeve) that he can be “chill” by hosting a “small gathering of friends” at his house. The small gathering ends up being a huge party that leaves his house trashed.

Otis gets extremely drunk, and after seeing Maeve with Isaac, he gets up and makes a speech that outrages Ola and breaks Maeve’s heart. Adam takes Ola to smash stuff, and Anwar racks up the courage to be honest with his boyfriend. Meanwhile, Jean is out dancing with Maureen and comes home to find Ruby sleeping in Otis’s bed.

7 WORST: Episode #1.2 (8.0)

The second episode of the series revolves around Aimee’s house party. Maeve invites Otis and Eric so they can start sampling their “sex pretzels.” Eric has a wardrobe malfunction and uses bananas to help Olivia with her “emesis” problem.

Otis treats a couple, but Maeve decides the business idea isn’t worthwhile. Adam tries to break in and speak to Aimee, but she’s already moved on with Kyle. Jean also shows up, ever the protective parent, and tries to talk Adam down.

6 BEST: Episode #1.7 (8.7)

Tensions come to a head in the penultimate episode of season 1. Jackson asks Maeve to the dance, and Otis asks Ola, even though neither of them really wants to go.

Sean accompanies Jackson and Maeve and sells drugs to the students, while Otis accidentally calls Ola a house cat. He also talks a student down from a cardboard moon, and Maeve realizes she’s in love with Otis. Ezra Furman appears in this episode to perform music for the dance.

5 WORST: Episode #1.1 (8.0)

It’s no surprise that the pilot is one of the lowest-rated episodes, though statistically speaking, 8.0 is an excellent rating for one of its “worst” episodes. Pilots often struggle to impress viewers, and Sex Education is no different, especially given its risky content.

Viewers don’t yet know what they’re getting into, which justifies this lower ranking. Still, the episode is hilarious while effectively introducing the themes; Adam struggles with sexual performance, and somewhat inadvertently, Jean and Otis help him. Aimee breaks up with him anyway, but Maeve sees the potential for a school-based sex therapy clinic.

4 BEST: Episode #1.5 (8.7)

Jackson and Maeve have finally started dating. He invites her to meet his parents, but she flees. Meanwhile, Otis has bought tickets to see Hedwig And The Angry Inch for Eric’s birthday, but a sex clinic emergency takes Otis to Aimee’s house with Maeve.

A revealing photo of Ruby has been sent around to torment her, and they must find out who sent it. Meanwhile, Eric’s things are stolen and he’s beaten up on his way home. He and Otis fall out, but after successfully finding Olivia guilty of sending the photo, the girls stand in unity at the end of the episode in one of the most empowering moments of the series.

3 WORST: Episode #2.5 (7.8)

An issue that many shows face is the bottle episode. When Remi takes Eric and Otis on a camping trip, viewers still see other characters, but the two leads don’t interact with anyone else.

It’s also a rather hopeless episode, with everything falling apart: Otis’s relationship with Maeve, Eric’s with Rahim and Adam, Jean with Jakob, and Remi’s entire life. Erin takes Maeve to an NA meeting, but it’s too much for Maeve. She ends up dancing with pensioners while Isaac laughs at her.

2 BEST: Episode #2.7 (9.0)

Perhaps the most empowering episode of the series, Episode #2.7 is the show’s highest-rated. The girls receive detention after being found in a compromising situation, though they insist that they’re innocent.

Aimee finally admits that she can’t get on the bus following her assault, so the girls all rally around her and start taking the bus with her – after a trip to the scrapyard to smash stuff. Ola and Maeve make amends, Lily kisses Ola, and Olivia escapes trouble after Michael leaks Jean’s therapy notes and learns that her boyfriend is underage.

1 WORST: Episode #2.8 (7.7)

A rating of 7.7/10 is by no means a bad one, but regardless, this is the lowest-rated episode of the show so far, and it’s easy to see why. The finale is pretty much a punch in the gut for fans. After two seasons of will-they, won’t-they, Otis and Maeve still don’t end up making amends.

They go their separate ways, and Isaac becomes something like a villain. Otis manages to get some closure with his father, and Maeve also seems content, despite having just sent her mum away. Aimee slowly makes her way back to Steve, and Jean learns that she’s pregnant. Jackson and Viv make up after the musical, and Adam is able to hold Eric’s hand.
