Sex Education Why Isaac Tells Maeve The Truth About Otis

Warning: this post contains spoilers for Sex Education season 3.

Sex Education season 2 left off on a cliffhanger involving Maeve and Otis, and here’s why Isaac tells her the truth about Otis’ voicemail in season 3. The Netflix series has largely subverted certain expectations about teen stories and, just when the audience might expect a relationship or a secret to drag on forever, Sex Education sharply turns a corner and surprises with the outcome.

During season 2, Maeve and Isaac were growing closer and the latter started developing feelings for his neighbor. However, Otis was in the way because Maeve liked him romantically and told him as much. Despite being mad at the way he acted out at a party, Otis hoped to make amends by leaving Maeve a voicemail that expressed his love for her. The voicemail was promptly deleted by Isaac. But even though it took him a few months to come clean about what he did, Isaac decided he couldn’t begin a romantic relationship with Maeve in Sex Education season 3 without telling her the truth of his past transgression.

Isaac telling Maeve the truth about what he did (and so early on in the show’s third season) was surprising, to say the least. But while he was seen as an antagonist in Sex Education season 2, he’s grown up a lot in season 3, which shows more sides to him than previous episodes did. Isaac truly and deeply cares for Maeve, so the fact that he would tell her the truth — one she deserved to know — just when they were starting to take their friendship into romantic territory, suggests that he couldn’t allow them to move forward with such a big secret. Isaac knew he messed up and wanted to make things right between him and Maeve; telling her the truth was the first step. There was also the Otis of it all. Deep down, Isaac knew Maeve might still have feelings for Otis and keeping the voicemail from her would have robbed Maeve of the agency to choose whether she wanted to be with Isaac or figure out her unresolved feelings for Otis.

All that said, the fact that Isaac at least felt guilty about deleting the voicemail and keeping it from Maeve for so long reveals that he cared enough about her to do it so as to prevent derailing their relationship when too much time has passed. Isaac telling Maeve the truth about Otis’ voicemail also reveals their open line of communication. Whereas it was difficult for Maeve and Otis to be honest with each other for a while (though they cleared the air between them in Sex Education season 3), Isaac and Maeve had a more communicative relationship. Interestingly enough, Isaac’s revelation did lead Maeve and Otis back to each other. After all, there were still some unresolved sexual tension there.

And when Otis was confronted about the voicemail, he was able to talk about his feelings and be honest with Maeve in a way he wasn’t ready to in Sex Education season 2. How Maeve’s relationship with both men fares in a potential season 4 remains to be seen, but at least all three characters were finally able to tell each other the truth at last.
