Sex Education’s Main Characters, Ranked By Meanness

Since the teens on Sex Education are still growing up, fans know they’ll not always be kind to one another. But which character has been the meanest?

Like many schools, Sex Education’s Moordale has got a clear hierarchy and social structure. Due to their intimidating behavior, The Untouchables have established that they are the ultimate rulers of the school. However, that doesn’t mean that there haven’t tried to usurp their role and attempted to change it for the better.

If fans take a look at the array of characters that attend Moordale, they will notice that there are so many kind and compassionate people, like Aimee and Ola, who have tried to make it a welcoming place. Unfortunately, there are also a few people who sometimes take this type of kindness for granted because they don’t seem to consider anyone else’s feelings other than their own. Luckily, since many of the characters are in a period of self-growth, fans may see this meanness dissipate soon. But until then, there are a few people who need to realize they should start treating their peers better.

10 Aimee Gibbs

In the three seasons that Aimee has appeared in, fans would agree that she is one of the sweetest and most selfless characters. She may have been part of “The Untouchables” when fans first met her, but she soon dropped them after realizing how horribly they treated everyone and her friends.

Since then, Aimee has only got more endearing to fans. Not only does she attend all of Maeve’s social events and encourage her to pursue her dreams, but she also does her best to help out her friends when need be. The fact that she is also a great listener and doesn’t care about the importance of social circles proves she is one of the nicest people in the world.

9 Vivienne Odusanya

When fans met her in season 2, Viv insisted that she didn’t have time for any friends because of the way her academic schedule was laid out. However, despite all the subjects and the extracurriculars she takes, Viv has still proven to be a great friend and a lovely person.

She played an important part in Jackson’s season 2 arc as her kindness and encouragement helped him quit the swimming team. She also played a huge part in the downfall of Hope, helping Jackson and Cal to bring all the sixth formers together after they got tired of her discriminatory and outdated views. Regardless of the consequences, Viv would always do what she thought was right.

8 Ola Nyman

If someone asked fans who they believed was an underrated character, there would be a few who would mention Ola. Despite being introduced in season 1, Ola hasn’t had as much screentime or development as the other characters (which is a shame since there are a ton of storylines the Sex Education writers could have used for Ola). Instead, she has often been used as moral support for her friends.

Nevertheless, from what fans have seen of her, Ola is a pretty great person. She is extremely supportive of her friends and always does her best to give them the best advice possible. Although some may say that her brutal honesty can hurt other people’s feelings, many fans know that Ola wouldn’t intentionally go out of her way to be malicious. She just wants to make sure everyone is happy.

7 Jackson Marchetti

When viewers first met the Headboy of Moordale, they were instantly drawn to him as he seemed a lot different than the other students. Although he could have easily fallen into the stereotype of the popular jock, it was quite refreshing to see that Jackson would interact with anyone outside his social circle.

Jackson also seems to genuinely care about the students of Moordale and their well-being, often fighting to create change and improve things for the better. He may have shown a bit of a mean streak by holding a grudge against Otis for a while, but it does appear to have dissipated as Jackson has realized there isn’t any point keeping all this negative energy bottled up.

6 Lily Iglehart

When it comes to Lily, many fans don’t know what to expect from her as she often comes out with random and blunt comments. While some of her one-liners have certainly made fans laugh, there have also been a few occasions where Lily has offended one of her friends because she doesn’t think about what she says or care that it has hurt them.

However, that doesn’t mean that she is a horrible person. It’s possible that her snarkish comments could be a defense mechanism, but there’s also a possibility that she doesn’t completely understand the damage her words cause. Nevertheless, she’s still a lot nicer than the other characters.

5 Maeve Wiley

If there is anyone in the series that has had a well-written and developed arc, it is Maeve. When the viewers first met Maeve, she wasn’t exactly the friendliest person to be around and was considered to be an outsider by the Moordale students. She would also use her sarcasm and wit to try and scare other people off.

However, over time, fans have come to realize that this is only a defense mechanism. Once Maeve realizes that her friends aren’t going to abandon her, it is here that the viewers see the true Maeve (the one that is extremely supportive and loyal, who would go to the ends of the earth to get her friends out of trouble). While there have been moments where she continues to push people away, Maeve does eventually learn from her mistakes and tries to learn from them.

4 Eric Effiong

Many fans would agree that Eric is one of the funniest characters on Sex Education as his one-liners have delivered plenty of laughs and created several iconic memes. However, that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been moments where Eric hasn’t been a little bit cruel. While fans are glad that Eric is embracing his identity, one aspect some fans haven’t liked is how he treats his boyfriends.

On two separate occasions, he has cheated on both Rahim and Adam because he has had doubts about these relationships. Rather than telling them that he was unhappy, Eric ends up hurting them a lot more by avoiding the issue and doing something impulsive. As much as fans adore Eric, they would like it if he would think about whether his actions would end up affecting others.

3 Otis Milburn

Otis may be the protagonist of the show, but that doesn’t mean he is the most likable character on Sex Education. Unfortunately, there have been several moments where he has acted like a jerk or has lashed out at others because his ego has been hurt (as evidenced by his season 2 birthday rant).

Even when he apologizes for his behavior, Otis doesn’t seem to have learned his lesson the first time around and ends up falling into the same patterns. It’s extremely frustrating that the fans are three years in and he doesn’t think before he speaks. Since Otis has now decided that he wants to be a therapist, maybe this weakness is something he will work on in season 4?

2 Adam Groff

Adam’s character arc is one of the most interesting aspects of Sex Education, with the young teen’s journey of self-discovery immediately drawing viewers in due to the compelling writing. However, there’s still much debate surrounding the question of whether Adam has achieved redemption or not.

While it has been rather fascinating to see Adam open up and talk about his feelings, many viewers can’t forget that he had been the school’s bully and has spent years intimidating the Moordale students. Hopefully, his anger issues and reputation are something that will improve in some of the future storylines.

1 Ruby Matthews

Although the fans were delighted to see the softer side of Ruby get developed in season 3, Moordale’s resident mean girl still has a long way to go if she wants to end up befriending more people. While Ruby is certainly an interesting character, many fans will agree that she hasn’t exactly been the most likable person in recent years.

Not only does she mock the other students of Moordale by calling them names or insulting their fashion sense, but Ruby has also been seen to mistreat her own friends occasionally too. While fans understand that it might be a defense mechanism, it is a little hard to watch as she lashes out at some of the other characters who have done nothing. With a bit of luck, the writers will continue to humanize Ruby in Sex Education’s fourth season.
