Now that Shadow and Bone has been renewed by Netflix for Season 2, many fans are desperately waiting for details about the chaos to come.

Season one of Shadow and Bone took its time to introduce the story of Alina Starkov and the Shadow Fold that she seems destined to destroy. Season two will continue that journey, as well as create new storylines for the thieving Crows from Ketterdam, creating even more differences from Leigh Bardugo’s novel series. Additionally, the novel season two is based on – Siege and Storm – partly takes place at sea, and it will be interesting to see what the location scouts and set designers come up with.
Also of interest is looking to where season two takes the characters physically, in terms of growing their powers, and romantically. What else might the future of Shadow and Bone have in store? What are fans most looking forward to?
10 New Cast Members
Via Leigh Bardugo’s newsletter, season two will be the debut of Prince Nikolai Lantsov, who book readers are very familiar with, as well as Wylan from the Six of Crows duology. Nikolai is well-beloved for his wit and intelligence, and it’ll be interesting to see how an actor pulls his complex character off.
Since the Crows’ storyline for the second season is likely to be new material, it’ll also be interesting to see what Wylan is needed for. In the novels, he is a new acquaintance to the rest of the Crows.
9 Sea Adventure
The next book in the series, Siege and Storm, deals with the search for the sea whip, the second of Morozova’s amplifiers, and it takes place where one would expect: at sea.
This is also the introduction of Grisha siblings Tolya and Tamar, who are helpful during the search. Mal’s tracking abilities are crucial, and seeing how all these new and old personalities play off each other during impending danger will be fascinating.
8 Character Development
Though Alina feels settled in getting away from the Darkling and finding a way to destroy the Fold at the end of season one, new characters and plot threads will help her character along to where she’s ultimately meant to be.
Based on the novel, Alina will face a new test involving working heavily with the other Grisha in the second season, and hopefully her adventures will mean she’s ready to face it. Kaz, meanwhile, will also continue to grow as a crime lord, back in Ketterdam.
7 Power Development
Even if Alina did develop her powers enormously throughout season one, she wasn’t able to stop the Darkling from expanding the Fold. Alina, like some leads of other shows, had to practice with her powers, and she didn’t always succeed. With the hunt for a second amplifier on, we’re excited to see what new things Alina will be able to do with her powers.
She hasn’t tested the boundaries of the first amplifier very much yet, either. Since Mal and Alina are traveling together, the audience will be privy to most of the hunt for the sea whip, so Mal’s tracking abilities will be increasing as well.
6 Romance
Though Mal and Alina seem fairly settled at the end of season one, the Darkling is still out there. So is handsome Nikolai Lantsov, whom Alina hasn’t met yet. New developments from both of these characters just might be enough to put something new in the path of Mal and Alina’s future.
Meanwhile, Matthias will be locked up in Hellgate, and it’s unclear what Kaz’s plan is with Nina. And speaking of Kaz, he managed to tell Inej she’s important last season – not to mention save her from a volcra – but what will he do next?
5 The Crows’ Next Move
It’ll be excellent to see Ketterdam again! The Crows left the city quickly at the beginning of season one, so other than the quick outmaneuvering of Pekka Rollins, the audience didn’t get to see very much of how Ketterdam really works and how the Crow Club functions.
We know from the end of season one that Kaz’s next plan involves a Heartrender somehow, but we don’t know how. That plan will come in season two, and we can’t wait.
4 The Darkling’s Next Move
Just what does the Darkling have planned for his new shadow monsters? Does he have anything awful in store for his mother, Baghra, since she helped Alina escape the palace in season one? As is obvious, we have lots of questions about the Darkling and what his next move is.
Some of those questions were answered in Shadow and Bone season one, but more cropped up. He seems pretty certain that he’s playing the villain role in this story, but we’re not so sure. Regardless, he is on the hunt for Alina and Mal, even as they search, in turn, for the sea whip.
3 New Plot Threads
Alina meets several new characters in Siege and Storm, and also undergoes a host of new challenges. Said new challenges will lead to plenty of excitement for season two, since the audience doesn’t know exactly what will be in store.
Season one generally stuck to the plot of Shadow and Bone, but was willing to add new elements and change things as necessary. Season two will be heading (at least a little bit) into the unknown.
2 Higher Stakes
Season two will definitely up the stakes for all the characters. The Darkling has additional reinforcements, not to mention the Fold has been expanded. Who knows what else will need to be overcome at the beginning of the second season?
Alina will grow further in control of her powers, but her challenges will also grow to match themselves to her expanded abilities. Kaz and his crew will be up against the crime bosses of Ketterdam, whom they easily avoided in season one.
1 Costume Design
The costume design for season one of Shadow and Bone was excellently varied. The keftas, done in different colors per Grisha order and set of powers, fit well with the setting. Detail work, such as the embroidery on other clothing like Mal’s First Army uniform, is also something the audience is looking to see more of.
New characters will undoubtably receive new costumes that, based on past experiences, will give clues to their identity and the things that matter to them.
