Shameless The D&D Moral Alignments Of The Main Characters

At first glance, one might think that everyone in this ragtag bunch would all fit somewhere under the Chaotic Alignment. But upon further inspection, figuring out the Dungeons and Dragon’s Moral Alignment of the Gallagher family is a lot more complicated.

Sure none of them fall under the lawful alignment, considering none of them take the law into account when making a decision but none of them are downright evil, so its not as easy as sorting a group like say, the DC Villains. The characters in Shameless have layers like an ogre and those layers and the development of the characters over the seasons make it so each them land in different places on the alignment scale.

10 Frank Gallagher- Chaotic Evil

Frank does not let the law, the wellbeing of others, or human decency affect his decisions in the slightest. He is the most selfish character on the show and for every decent moment he has he seems to go and do something awful to overturn that good deed. From calling CPS on his own family as revenge for being kicked out to letting someone die so he could collect her pension (R.I.P. Dottie) he is always hurting those around him for his own benefit, falling perfectly under Chaotic Evil.

9 Liam Gallagher- Neutral Good

Liam is the glowing redemption of the family and he has a strong moral code but is slightly indifferent when it comes to the law due to the way he was raised. He seems to have mastered manipulation and schemes as he successfully tricks Frank into attending Ian’s wedding in the season 10 finale. He never goes quite to the extremes of his family and even stops Frank quite a few times from committing a crime, even making sure Frank gets caught on occasion.

8 Fiona Gallagher- True Neutral

Until her rocky end, Fiona was mostly selfless, always the one with the plan on how to keep together the Gallagher clan. She sacrificed her teen years, her education, and many relationships in order to be the sole provider and caretaker for her family in her drunken father’s absence. Yes, she went on a downward spiral to rock bottom, but you can only be stretched too thin before you snap.

She does what she has to and when she breaks the law its for her family, usually never for her own benefit. She doesn’t really care either way about the law but she doesn’t go out of her way to break it unless her family’s well being is threatened.

7 Lip Gallagher- True Neutral

Lip is a good guy whose really smart but he makes a lot of stupid decisions. He cheats on girls he cares about, he messes up his college career for an affair with a Professor and he lets alcohol take over his life for a short time. He never cared much for the law as it never benefited him and he was usually on the wrong side of it in his attempt to help the family. He even goes out of his way to help Xan and Professor Youens, which in no way benefits his life, only makes it harder. But he loses a few points for pulling out the ventilator of that guy in Season 9 to help Xan escape.

6 Carl Gallagher- Chaotic Neutral

Carl starts the show in the early season throwing off serious psychopath vibes as he loves to blow stuff up and is obsessed with guns and knives. He later transfers this passion to the military, eager to join the army. There, he sticks up for a trans soldier (although, he thought trans meant transferred), but he has shown some heart in his maturity, landing him in the chaotic neutral alignment.

5 Debbie Gallagher- Chaotic Neutral

Shameless The D&D Moral Alignments Of The Main Characters

Debbie has done some shady shady stuff on the show, between stealing babies, tricking Derrick into impregnating her and sleeping with an underage girl and her mother at the same time, she definitely lives up to the Shameless name.

But besides her half-hearted attempts at motherhood and her loyalty for the most part to the Gallagher plan, Debbie is pretty selfish with no regard for the law or the impact her decisions have on others. She’s not as bad as Frank, but she also raped a guy, stoles strollers from moms, and took advantage of a woman dying of cancer and her husband.

4 Ian Gallagher- Chaotic Good

Shameless The D&D Moral Alignments Of The Main Characters

Ian becomes a champion for the homeless and LGBT youth in the southside in the last few seasons and even before this he always stood up for the underdogs. His love for Mickey causes him to both act selfless and selfish (like pissing in the gas tank of Mickey’s fling) when he gets hurt but it is obvious Ian cares deeply for those he is close with. But his bipolar disorder causes him to behave chaotically like when he blew up the van to stop a boy from being kidnapped and forced into gay conversion. His vigilante like actions secures him a spot under Chaotic Good.

3 Mickey Milkovich- Chaotic Neutral

Besides his huge temper and liking to solve problems with violence, Mickey doesn’t have too many bad qualities and his character is a fan favorite. His aggression is circumstances to living with a homophobe dad who leads a mob of angry Milkovich.

Mickey is violent because that’s the only way he knows to channel the feelings he has. He handles things with his fists and yes he may have tried to murder Sammi. But she was the worst and he was protecting Ian and his family. He’s not evil just misguided, so chaotic neutral would be a perfect fit.

2 Veronica – Neutral Good

Shameless The D&D Moral Alignments Of The Main Characters

Veronica is the mama bear of the group, especially after Fiona leaves. She is always tending to wounds and she’s always eager to lend her neighbors the toaster, much to Kevin’s chagrin. She doesn’t really care for the law though or authority, as she doesn’t seem to mind masquerading the twins as one girl so they can get them into a good school, or selling stolen goods or making a buck off of prescriptions. But she risks going to jail to continue writing the prescriptions for the underprivileged and she always has a shoulder to lean. She doesn’t land as high as almost perfect Liam does in this alignment but she inches past neutral due to her good heart and by being the most loyal member of the group.

1 Kevin Ball- Neutral

If it weren’t for each other, Kevin and Veronica might fall into the Chaotic Neutral category as they balance each other out and pull each other back when one has gone too far in their schemes. Kevin loves sex and a quick buck and is often driven by his pursuit of both, even faking molestation at one point for the hope of collecting on a lawsuit. Underneath it, all Kevin just wants to be happy and provide a good life for his family. He just won’t hesitate to break the law to do it.
