ShangChis Credits Scene Supports The Best Captain Marvel Endgame Theory

Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) appears in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ mid-credits scene, and her look supports a theory about the character from Avengers: Endgame. Following on from being paged by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Avengers: Infinity War’s post-credits scene, Carol Danvers arrived on Earth to help the Avengers during the battle against Thanos in Endgame. Although Captain Marvel wasn’t in Endgame as much as audiences might’ve expected, she still made her presence felt in the fight against the Mad Titan – coming close to besting him in a one-on-one fight – and proved herself as one of the most powerful characters in the MCU.

Another notable aspect of Carol’s appearance in Avengers: Endgame was her haircut: she begins the movie with long hair like in 2019’s Captain Marvel, but after the time jump returns with it cut much shorter, and no reason was given for it at the time (not that one was absolutely necessary). Shang-Chi’s mid-credits scene shows Captain Marvel’s hairstyle has changed again after Endgame, as she’s grown it back out, sporting a longer look that’s closer to what viewers saw in her solo movie. Once again the change is unexplained, but it does fit with a popular Endgame fan theory.

In WandaVision, it’s revealed that Carol’s old friend Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) died during the five-years between Infinity War and Endgame after being diagnosed with cancer. Because of that came the theory Captain Marvel’s hair in Endgame was a result of shaving her head in support of Maria while she was undergoing cancer treatment, and though there isn’t any explicit confirmation of it, it would fit with Carol’s character and the close bond the pair were shown to have. Since Captain Marvel once again has long hair in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ credits scene, it suggests the change wasn’t just done because she wanted a change of hairstyle, and makes it more likely she shaved her head to support her friend and it’s now fully grown back out.

Based on Shang-Chi’s place in the MCU timeline, then the post-credits scene takes place around six months after Avengers: Endgame; Carol’s hair has grown pretty quickly in that time, although it’s not quite as long as it was prior to the time jump. Of course, it’s not entirely out of the question she simply did decide to make the change and then grow it back, while in real world terms it’s simply easier to have Larson appear with her current hair length at the time of filming, especially for such a short scene. But the timeline of her going into space, and then largely being unaccounted for, and re-emerging with much shorter hair does fit with Maria’s cancer and passing, and Shang-Chi’s credits scene further fits with that idea.

Given Captain Marvel’s new look in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ mid-credits, then it’s likely this will be the hairstyle she’s sporting in The Marvels too. That movie could – and arguably should – explain exactly what happened, since it’ll reunite Carol with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). In WandaVision, Monica didn’t seem too happy at the mention of Captain Marvel’s name, suggesting a falling out might’ve happened; The Marvels can shed light on that, and Carol showing she cut her hair in support of Maria could help show she was there for her friend when she was needed, taking a simple hairstyle change and making it an emotional part of their journeys in the MCU.
