Shazam 2 Set Photo Shows Freddy Kissing Rachel Zegler’s Mystery Character

A new spoilery set photo from Shazam! Fury of the Gods shows Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy kissing Rachel Zegler’s mysterious character.

A set photo from Shazam! Fury of the Gods shows Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy kissing Rachel Zegler’s mystery character. Director David S. Sandberg’s Shazam! (2019) finally brought Billy Batson (Asher Angel), his titular alter ego (Zachary Levi), and his family of foster siblings, who also become adult superheroes via a single utterance of “Shazam,” to the big screen. The film, which grossed $366 million worldwide, more than warranted a sequel.

Filming for Sandberg’s follow-up, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is well underway with Angel, Grazer, Ian Chen (Eugene), Jovan Armand (Pedro), Faithe Herman (Darla), and Grace Fulton (Mary) all reprising their roles from the first film. Levi, Adam Brody, D.J. Cotrona, Ross Butler, and Meagan Good will also return as the superhero alter egos of these characters and Djimon Hounsou as the wizard Shazam. New additions to the cast include Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as DC villains Hespera and Kalypso, daughters of the Greek god Atlas. Zegler (West Side Story) has also joined the cast in an unknown role. However, set photos of Zegler in costume have seemingly confirmed she will be playing a superhero character.

The latest peek at the Shazam! sequel comes courtesy of Shazam Updates on Twitter. The account posted a spoilery photo from the set showing Zegler and Grazer’s characters sharing a kiss. Check it out below:

While nothing official regarding Zegler’s character has been released, many have speculated that she’ll be playing the sister of Mirren and Liu’s characters, a fellow daughter of Atlas. She may start out as a villain, pretending to be an ally of Billy and love interest to his brother, Freddy, to gain their trust. Regardless, it seems clear that a romantic subplot between Freddy and Zegler’s mystery character is in the cards, which will inevitably cause problems between Billy and Freddy if Zegler’s character is revealed to be an antagonist. However, this is merely speculation.

On the other hand, Zegler’s character may not be a villain at all and could be the key to stopping the “fury of the gods.” Shazam! Fury of the Gods may connect to the upcoming Black Adam and is expected to help set up the future of the DC Extended Universe, a future Zegler’s character could very much be a part of. That said, fans won’t know for sure what’s in store for Freddy until the film’s first trailer is released, which may be unveiled at this October’s DC FanDome event. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will release in theaters on June 2, 2023.
