A new gameplay trailer for the upcoming prequel game Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One has been made available, giving players a glimpse at how combat and detective skills will work. The game is the latest in a long line of Sherlock Holmes games developed by French studio Frogwares, with the first title releasing in 2002 and the most recent coming in 2016 in the form of Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter. However, the studio’s latest release was the Lovecraftian mystery game The Sinking City.

According to previous information revealed by Frogwares, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One will be an origin story for the character. It will take place in a Mediterranean setting and see the 21-year-old detective take on his first case alongside his friend Jonathan. The developer has promised the game will also be a more narrative experience and take a lot of inspiration from the open-world of The Sinking City.

Frogwares has shown off some of the gameplay changes coming to Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One via a trailer published by IGN. The footage gives an indication of how players will take part in combat and explore the world around them. It looks as if users will be able to shoot at enemies and fight in hand-to-hand combat, with the famous fictional detective engaging in plenty of confrontations during the two two-minute video. Parts of the trailer also show the character changing costumes and how the new Global Investigation System works, including how Holme’s interacts with things such as the casebook.

Although Frogwares has been working on the new Sherlock Holmes game since the launch of The Sinking City last year, the developer has been embroiled in controversy surrounding a legal dispute with publisher Nacon. Both companies allege the other breached the contract dictating the terms of how the game can be distributed, leading to the title being de-listed from storefronts such as Steam. The legal fight is currently going through the French court system with no end in sight.

While Frogwares has been developing Sherlock Holmes games for almost two decades, the quality of the series has not always been that great. But from the little that the developer has shown off of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, it appears as if the studio is making some drastic changes that should help improve the experience for players.
