Should You Charge Your New MacBook Pro Via MagSafe or Thunderbolt 4

Apple has announced new MacBook Pro laptops, and they bring lots of new features, some of which used to be present on older models but were removed. One such feature is MagSafe which is now back and better. The new MacBook Pro laptops ship with a MagSafe cable and a USB-C power adapter for charging, but Apple says the user can also use the Thunderbolt 4 port (USB-C port) for charging. Depending on the mode of charging, the experience is different.

A lot of manufacturers, including Apple, have switched to a USB-C connector for charging their laptops. However, despite the popularity of USB-C, it is not uncommon to see some manufacturers stick to proprietary connectors such as Microsoft, whose Surface Pro 8 has a Surface Connect port for charging but also supports Power Delivery charging via its Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The MacBook Pro comes in 14” and 16” models, and depending on the model and configuration, Apple will ship the laptop with a 67W/96W/140W power adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. So while MagSafe is the default charging mode, there may be situations when charging via the Thunderbolt 4 port is possible. Thus, it is worth knowing that the charging speed will differ depending on the charging port in use.

Which is faster, MagSafe or Thunderbolt 4 charging?

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is also available in M1 Pro and M1 Max versions, and all configurations ship with a 140W USB-C power adapter. This means the laptop will charge at the maximum possible power rating with the bundled MagSafe cable and charger. However, when charging via the Thunderbolt 4 port, the charging speed will not be as fast. The reason for this is Thunderbolt 4 has a maximum power rating of 100W, which is lower than what the 140W MagSafe 3 offers. So, using a USB-C to USB-C cable and the included 140W power adapter or a spare 100W Power Delivery power adapter to charge via the Thunderbolt 4 port won’t be as fast as the MagSafe cable + 140W power adapter included in the box.

For the 14-inch MacBook Pro, the design with an M1 Pro 8-Core CPU ships with a 67W power adapter and MagSafe 3 cable, while the computer with an M1 Pro 10-core CPU or M1 Max chipset ships with a 96W power adapter cable and MagSafe 3 cable. Apple has revealed that the 67W power adapter won’t fast charge (empty to 50 percent in about 30 minutes) the MacBook Pro. Those who want fast charging can pay an extra $20 at checkout for a 96W power adapter. However, buyers who already own a USB-C to USB-C cable and a Power Delivery charger that can output 100W can get fast charging via the Thunderbolt 4 port instead of paying Apple extra money.

The return of MagSafe is good news for Apple fans who mourned its removal in 2017. While it is the best charging option for the 16-inch model, having support for charging via the Thunderbolt 4 port is a good addition.
