Sidney Poitier is one of the most iconic and important figures in the history of Hollywood. Not only is Poitier considered one of the finest actors to ever grace the screen and stage, but he was also personally instrumental in helping to erode the social and stereotypical barriers between black and white actors on and off-screen.

In 1964, Poitier became the first black actor to win an Oscar for Best Leading Actor, a feat that held until Denzel Washington repeated the feat nearly four decades later. 10 Cry, The Beloved Country (1952) 89%

Adapted from the Alan Paton novel, Cry, the Beloved Country is set in a South African backwater in which a black minister named Stephen Kumalo (Canada Lee) searches for his missing son and sister.

When Stephen reaches Johannesburg, he’s stunned to witness his fellow African people living in squalid conditions. He meets Reverend Misimangu (Poitier), a young church official who helps Stephen find his thieving son and his prostituting sister in the city’s slums.

9 A Patch Of Blue (1965) 89%

Written and directed by Guy Green from the Elizabeth Kata novel, A Patch of Blue stars Elizabeth Hartman as an illiterate white blind woman who finds intimate solace from an educated black man.

Selina (Hartman) lives in a dingy Los Angeles apartment with her mother Rose-Ann (Shelley Winters) and her father. When she meets Gordon Ralfe (Poitier) at a park one day, a compassionate office employee who treats with her a kindness she isn’t used to. Unaware that Gordon is black, the two continue to meet in the park every day and eventually fall in love.

1967 was arguably the most important year of Poitier’s career. He made three iconic and instrumental movies that helped break down the racial stigma attached to black actors. One such included To Sir, With Love, in which Poitier plays a school teacher dealing with prejudicial white students in England.

Poitier plays Mark Thackeray in the film, a teacher and aspiring engineer assigned to a school in the ghetto of London’s East End. Most of his students are unruly white kids who react to their new teacher differently.

The same year Joseph L. Mankiewicz won a Best Director Oscar for All About Eve, he also explored race relations in No Way Out, Sidney Poitier’s second feature film.

Poitier plays Dr. Luther Brooks, a surgeon assigned to operate on two white racists after being wounded in a gas station stick-up. Ray Biddle (Richard Widmark) refuses to be helped by Dr. Brooks because of his dark skin, and when his brother George (Harry Bellaver) dies during his operation, Ray accuses Dr. Brooks of murder.

Poitier scored an Academy Award for Best Leading Actor following his towering turn in Lilies of the Field, in which he plays a wanderer mistaken as the messiah when stumbling upon a religious farm.

When his car overheats, unemployed carpenter Homer Smith happens upon a ranch full of European Catholic nuns headed by stern Sister Maria (Lilia Skala). Maria and her congregation believe Homer has been a godsend to help them build a church in the desert, which would mark the only place of worship in the area.

Adapted from the Lorraine Hansberry stage play, A Raisin in the Sun chronicles the hardscrabble existence of an impoverished black family dreaming of a better life.

Poitier stars as Walter Lee Younger, a young man dissatisfied with his lot in life. Living in tight quarters with his wife, son, mother, and sister, Walter dreams of better days until a $10,000 insurance check comes in the mail. With each family member planning different ways to use the money, Walter realizes you can’t put a price on dignity.

4 In The Heat Of The Night (1967) 94%

Named Best Picture of 1967, In the Heat of the Night is yet another film in which Poitier explores the racial dynamic between black and white people. Poitier plays Virgil Tibbs, a skilled Philadelphia police detective who is racially profiled in Sparta, Mississippi following the death of a wealthy white businessman.

Arrested and accused of murder, Tibbs’ name is eventually cleared and he is allowed to pursue the real killer. Yet, his life remains in peril as he navigates the racially charged environment of the American south.

3 Sing Your Song (2011) 95%

In the documentary film Sing Your Song, Poitier sings the praises of fellow entertainer and Civil Rights icon Harry Belafonte, an iconic African American luminary whose contributions for social justice made a global impact.

The film combines contemporary interviews with archival footage meant to depict the massive footprint Belafonte has left on the world. Born nine days apart, Poitier and Belafonte became close friends after meeting for the first time in 1947. Both men have been civil rights champions and decade-long contributors to the cause.

Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, Poitier plays FBI Agent Warren Stantin, who is assigned to catch a murderer who has retreated to the mountainous terrain of the Pacific Northwest. Out of his element, Warren hires professional tracker John Knox (Berenger) to help find the killer, who has cunningly infiltrated the hiking group headed by Knox’s girlfriend Sarah (Kristy Alley).
