Simpsons Creator Confident Disney Will Do Another Movie

The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, is confident Disney will want to do a feature-length sequel to the 2007 Simpsons movie. Debuting on TV in 1987, it took 20 years for everyone’s favorite yellow family to hit theaters, and The Simpsons Movie predictably went on to achieve significant box office success. Unfortunately, production on The Simpsons Movie was not a smooth process, with Groening and other writers from the TV series agonizing and rewriting script drafts even after the animation stage had begun. While this sort of disruption can usually harm a film’s critical reaction, The Simpsons Movie was positively received by fans and reviewers alike.

A potential sequel to The Simpsons Movie was first mentioned by long-serving producer, James L. Brooks, in 2014, who confirmed that Fox were interested in a second cinematic outing for Homer and the gang. Several years later, however, fellow producer, Al Jean, claimed that the sequel had only just entered the early stages of development. Further reports emerged confirming work on The Simpsons Movie 2 last year, but news on the project has been quiet ever since. Since those initial comments, Fox has been purchased by Disney, and therefore The Simpsons is now fully under the jurisdiction of Micky Mouse, putting the status of The Simpsons Movie 2 in further doubt.

Speaking at this year’s San Diego Comic Con event (via NME), The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, was questioned about the status of The Simpsons Movie 2 and expressed his confidence that the sequel would happen…eventually. However, the animation legend was also quick to point out the heavy toll the original film took on his staff. Groening stated:

“No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money…The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”

From a financial perspective, Groening’s comments make complete sense. Disney have spent a ton of money buying up Fox’s properties and The Simpsons is arguably one of the biggest acquisitions from that long-winded deal. While The Simpsons remains a presence on TV (and will feature Jason Momoa in an upcoming episode), the show’s glory days are certainly behind it, and a big screen offering is perhaps the more lucrative option for Disney, and will perhaps appeal to fans that have drifted away from the franchise.

On the other hand, Groening’s comments do seem to suggest that production on The Simpsons Movie 2 hasn’t progressed since the 2017/2018 update. The sequel was said to have entered the early stages of production in 2017, but the fact that Groening can only give his thoughts on whether The Simpsons Movie 2 will actually happen or not suggests the project has stalled once again. While this update may be a frustrating one for fans, the (Treehouse of) horror stories Groening and other Simpsons staff have told regarding the crafting of the first movie make their trepidation on the sequel completely understandable.
