Universal Pictures has debuted the first trailer for Illumination’s animated musical sequel Sing 2, which is slated to hit theaters this Christmas. The sequel will center on the ever-optimistic koala Buster Moon and his new cast attempting to debut a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in the fictional Redshore City. Needing to get in the good graces of Crystal Entertainment mogul Jimmy Crystal, Moon and the gang must track down reclusive rock star legend Clay Calloway to persuade him to return to the stage after pitching the idea to Crystal.

The sequel will see the return of franchise stars Matthew McConaughey, Taron Egerton, Reese Witherspoon, Nick Kroll, Seth MacFarlane, Tori Kelly, and writer/director Garth Jennings. In addition, Sing 2 will see the additions of Bono as Calloway, Bobby Cannavale as Jimmy Crystal, Halsey as Jimmy’s spoiled daughter Porsha, Pharrell Williams, Letitia Wright, Eric Andre, and Chelsea Peretti. After conducting production remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the musical sequel is finally on its way.

After debuting a series of character posters for the film, including Bono’s lion rock star Calloway, Universal and Illumination have revealed the first trailer for Sing 2. The first footage offers fans a look at the gorgeous animation from the powerhouse studio as well as the musical adventure Moon and his cast will venture on in the film. Check out the trailer below:

Where the first Sing shone with its heartwarming-yet-predictable story, the sequel looks to be raising the emotional stakes for all of its characters, namely newcomer Calloway. Though yet to be confirmed, the trailer points towards the reclusive rock star having once been in love but losing his partner to a terminal illness, seemingly leading to his decision to step back from the public and grieve in isolation. Family-friendly movies have certainly explored such characters before, with the tearjerker opening of Pixar’s Up still acting as one of the most impressive and mature for the genre.

But where Ed Asner’s Carl took to the sky with a balloon-supported house to bring him his closure, Sing 2 will utilize its rousing soundtrack and musical setting to try to help Calloway bounce back. The use of a cover version of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” feels all the more poignant in the trailer with Bono portraying the emotionally devastated rockstar, even if a bit on the nose with the band’s frontman in the role. Only time will tell how many tissues fans will need at the ready when the musical sequel hits theaters this Christmas.
