Skull & Bones Will Be Like a Cross Between Fortnite and Sea Of Thieves

Skull & Bones is reportedly undergoing a full-scale reboot, which is bringing the game closer to a cross between Epic’s Fortnite and Rare’s Sea of Thieves. This is due to various internal reasons, which are responsible for several delays of the title.

Skull & Bones was initially announced back in 2017 when it was revealed as an action-packed multiplayer pirate game with a deep focus on naval battles originating from Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. The project was expected to launch during the 2018 holiday season, but that never happened. Instead, Skull & Bones faced a series of delays, which is somewhat understandable given it’s Ubisoft Singapore’s the first proper title. The latest delay specifies the potential release window as Ubisoft’s next fiscal year, which starts on April 1st, 2021. That means prospective players will have to wait almost a whole additional to finally grab the game.

According to VGC’s anonymous development sources, Ubisoft executives decided to reboot Skull & Bones completely since its concept wasn’t a convincing fit for the company’s portfolio of other open-world projects. While the original idea behind the game was basically a pirate-themed World of Warships lookalike, the reboot is expected to take a different route. Developers are now drawing inspiration from live-service games, such as Fortnite’s massive seasonal events and consistently engaging content drops. Skull & Bones is said to adopt Fortnite’s social and narrative elements, which will make it much closer to Rare’s Sea of Thieves, with a very similar approach of delivering new content and adventures planned in tow. Simply put, Ubisoft Singapore is abandoning a competitive focus in favor of live-service social interactions.

Ubisoft Singapore developers hinted at this focus shift more than a year ago on Twitter, when they published an update on the game’s state announcing yet another delay. This was later confirmed by Ubisoft during a financial call, and that tweet is the only thing shared by the official Skull & Bones Twitter account since then, probably indicating that the team has been busy reworking the game. There’s no information on when developers might show off this upgraded version of the game, and it was one of many absences from the recent Ubisoft Forward event. However, there will be another Ubisoft Forward soon, so there’s a chance that Skull & Bones could make an appearance in some form.

It’s most probable that Ubisoft was worried about the potential longevity of the game and the ways it could be monetized long-term. There’s a sensible shift in the industry towards the games as a service model, which is influencing numerous companies – including Ubisoft – to introduce new solutions going as far as rebooting titles. Skull & Bones might actually benefit from it a lot in terms of gameplay variety and richness, which in return will attract a loyal audience, much like it happened to Fortnite (and, to a lesser extent, Sea of Thieves).
