Danielle Panabaker was in several Disney projects that 2000s fans loved. She got on famously with Brenda Song in 2004’s Stuck in the Suburbs and got to do a movie with her sister, Kay, called Read it and Weep, which came out in 2006. In between her popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Danielle played Layla in Sky High. This movie was not a DCOM in the traditional sense, because it actually premiered in theaters—you may have gone to see it in 2005 yourself.
Sky High is one of many titles with a frustrating message on Disney+. “Due to existing agreements,” no one can watch it on the new streaming service until December 2020. It can be rented on Amazon Prime or YouTube, though. To get ready for a rewatch of this epic movie, here are ten interesting facts about Danielle Panabaker’s character, Layla.
10 Panabaker’s First Powers
Many know Danielle Panabaker for her role as Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost in the Arrowverse. Panabaker stepped into this role in 2014. However, she was known as a superhero on Sky High well before she became a complex villain. It’s interesting that Panabaker played the character of Layla in a kids’ movie and has gotten to play a much different—but still powerful—character years later. What would Layla think of Killer Frost? Ironically, there is another character in Sky High called Freeze Girl!
9 Welcome to Sky High
In the 2005 film, Layla attends the titular Sky High. This is a special school for teens who are developing their superpowers. In case you forgot, Layla and her best friend, Will, get a pretty sweet ride to school on a flying school bus! This fly transportation is necessary, as Sky High is literally suspended in the sky.
8 Helping the Sidekicks
There are some strong and incredible heroes in the movie, like Will’s parents. There are also some frightening villains, like Royal Pain. Some of the Sky High kids haven’t figured out what they can do yet, though. Layla stands in solidarity with these students, nicknamed “the sidekicks,” which shows early on that she is a compassionate and empathetic friend. She’s only in their class because she doesn’t want to use her powers for show, but the group means so much more to Layla.
7 Layla’s Special Powers
Half the fun of Sky High is watching characters grow into their special powers. While Will is a late bloomer, Layla already knows that she has the power to control vegetation and make plants grow. That power comes in handy later in the movie in unexpected ways. It also fits with Layla’s gentle and nurturing nature. There’s a cute moment with Layla and Will where she grows an apple because she can’t do lemons.
6 Green Days
It’s interesting that characters in Sky High each wear a specific color scheme throughout the film. For example, Zach wears highlighter yellow, Magenta wears pink and purple hues, and Will matches his parents’ Americana color scheme. Some of the colors make more sense than others; Zach has glow-in-the-dark powers, so yellow is fitting. Magenta turns into a guinea pig, so she probably just likes the color.
As for Layla, green is the perfect color for someone who has power over plants. Layla loves her ability to make things grow, so it makes sense for her to express that in her wardrobe by wearing green most of the time.
5 Stronghold On Her Heart
It becomes pretty obvious that Layla is in love with Will Stronghold. The story was a unique teen comedy for its time, but Disney definitely milked the “best friend to boyfriend” trope. Layla has to deal with Will’s interest in a popular and powerful senior named Gwen. We won’t spoil it, but Gwen is bad news. Layla is the one who has been there for Will all along.
4 Warren In The Wings
Layla is a smart girl who doesn’t just sit by when things go wrong. When Will doesn’t get the picture, Layla tries to make him jealous. She starts hanging out with a mysterious student named Warren Peace who has a villain for a father and a hero for a mother. It turns out that Warren is good, and he really helps Layla and friends when it counts the most.
3 Commander and Jetstream
Will’s parents, known in the superhero world as the Commander and Jetstream (played by Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston), love Layla and treat her like part of the family. They are still as oblivious as Will is sometimes, though.
The Strongholds somehow miss the fact that they are being lured to Sky High not to accept an award, but to be killed. When the powers that be are taken down by evil, it’s up to Layla, Will, and the sidekicks to save the day.
2 Villains in Vines
Although Layla is a peaceful person and wants to cultivate good, she recognizes that there is a time to use her powers to take down what is bad. A duplicating villain named Penny multiplies herself at the end of the movie, and Layla has an epic scene where she conjures rapidly entangling vines to stop the many Pennys.
1 Happily Ever Heroes
As you might guess or remember, all’s well that end’s well for Layla and Will. Will discovers that he is not only strong like his dad, but he can fly like his mom! After they singlehandedly save their school and its heroes, Will and Layla can focus on their relationship. They share a kiss while hanging in the sky. The boy wakes up and realizes that his best friend is there, after all.
