Thievery is not an uncommon practice in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and whether it be through pickpocketing or burglary, players can often amass quite an amount of stolen items in their inventory. While the former owners of the swiped goods may be oblivious to the players’ crime, Skyrim’s merchants somehow are aware and refuse to buy any stolen gains from players. Fortunately, there is a way to sell one’s contraband, but players must first come into contact with the Thieves Guild in Skyrim.
The Thieves Guild is a faction in Skyrim that condones and supports the illegal ventures of its members as well as its clients. Headquartered in the sewers of Riften, the guild’s band of professional thieves can train players in lockpicking, pickpocketing, archery, and sneaking. If players wish to continue in their ways of pilfering and make a profit from their endeavors, joining the Thieves Guild in Skyrim should be their first step.
The first and primary way players can sell their stolen items in Skyrim is by doing business with Fences. A Fence is a Thieves Guild member who, unlike ordinary traders and merchants, will readily buy contraband from the player. However, the drawback is that the guild will take a cut from the earnings, meaning the player will lose a small percentage of the profit. In the beginning, Fences will only carry 1,000 gold, but as players perform small jobs and quests for the guild, their buying power for stolen goods grows. To sell items to a Fence, players must complete the first Thieves Guild quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Finding a Fence in Skyrim
To join the Thieves Guild in Skyrim, speak to Brynjolf in Riften. Players can find him wandering the market during the day or in the Bee and Barb tavern at night. After successfully entering the guild’s hideout and becoming a member, players can speak to Tonilia the Fence to sell their stolen goods. As an official Thieves Guild member, players can also do business with other Fences in Skyrim. However, keep in mind that a prerequisite quest must be completed before these Fences will barter stolen items.
- Mallus Maccius: located in Honningbrew Meadery near Whiterun. Complete the quest “Dampened Spirits.”
- Gulum-Ei: located in The Winking Skeever in Solitude. Complete the quest “Scoundrel’s Folly.”
- Enthir: located in the Hall of Attainment in Winterhold. Complete the quest “Hard Answers.”
This next set of Fences buy stolen items only after players have completed the City Influence quests from Vex and Delvin Mallory.
- Niranye: located in Windhelm, east of the main gate. Complete the quest “Summerset Shadows.”
- Endon: located in the Silver-Blood Inn within Markath. Complete the quest “Silver Lining.”
- Any Khajiit Caravan: located in various locations in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Complete a Miscellaneous Quest given by Tonilia once the Thieves Guild has a strong influence in Skyrim.
Alternatively, players can sell stolen items to normal merchants in Skyrim once the Speech Tree’s “Fence” Perk has been activated. However, this perk will likely be unlocked much later in the game, as it requires Level 90 Speech, including all its prerequisite perks.
