When it comes to speedrunning, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an interesting game to watch as there are so many ways to reach the end in a very short amount of time, but learning to speedrun begins with finding the right builds. Skyrim is known for having a lot of bugs, and speedrunners will tactically use them to beat the game in less than a half hour. However, there several types of speedruns that players can choose to do that each have their own requirements, such as the Glitchless Main Quest category, which runners will want a specific build to best complete.

Speedrunning, for those not familiar, is exactly what it sounds like. Players try to find the most efficient ways to complete a game in the fastest way possible in various ways. This includes categories like Any%, which means the entirety of the game’s content or narrative doesn’t need to be completed, or more unique challenges that require varying levels of completion – to say nothing out of far-flung challenges like beating Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with two blindfolds on. Pretty much any game can have a speedrun attached to it and some, like Skyrim’s, are mind-blowing when the right strategies are used.

Speedrun.com was established to keep track of record-setting times, which includes the categories, times, and names of runners for almost any game imaginable. The fastest runner for completing the main story without the use of glitches is a runner called nucular (Jackson Reynolds), who holds a time of 1h 14m 07s (without loading screens). In contrast, the runner who holds the fastest time in all but two categories is a runner who goes by Waz, who utilizes some of Skyrim’s most fun and complicated glitches, as well as complicated game manipulation to perform their runs. For those who want to try to beat existing records or work towards their own personal best, here are the best builds to speedrun Skyrim.

Skyrim’s Best Speedrunning Build (No Glitches)

nucular’s glitchless speedrun of the main quest starts off by choosing to play as a High Elf because they move 8% faster than any other race and regenerate magicka the fastest. The latter is especially important because there are only a handful of weapons that will be used, and even then, they will be used to fight dragons. Flame is equipped, as that spell will be most of the player’s offense for the run until they acquire the Flame Atronach spell from Winterhold.

Changes to the base build won’t occur until beginning Delphine’s quest to fight the Thalmor, where players will acquire the Elven Light Armor for a little more protection. When it comes to how to defeat Skyrim dragons quickly, players should grab a two-handed weapon such as the Orcish Greatsword that Delphine has in her lair, but that will be replaced once players can acquire Dragonbane. The only missing part of the build is the “Whirlwind Sprint” shout, which propels the player forward at high speed. That is all players need to beat the main story without any glitches and under an hour and a half.

Skyrim’s Best Speedrunning Build (With Glitches)

Waz takes a very different approach in his main quest speedrun (with glitches), which is finished in only 22m 58s 430ms. Waz’s run reveals that the best Skyrim character build across the board for glitch-friendly runs goes as follows: play as a High Elf for the speed and magicka buff and equip Flame. That’s it.

In some of his specific runs, such as the Dark Brotherhood Speedrun, there are moments that seem as though he’s buying armor, but in reality, he’s utilizing a complicated glitch that actually gives him gold instead. In any run, gold is important because it’s sometimes quicker to get to some locations by being arrested and paying the fee to be released. While these builds may seem a touch underwhelming, given their simplicity, it’s a testament to just how little players actually need in order to complete a game as massive and difficult as Skyrim.
