Surprisingly, the dragons aren’t the hardest bosses in Skyrim. That title instead goes to Miraak, the main antagonist of the game’s Dragonborn DLC.

Skyrims Hardest Boss Isn’t A Dragon

There is a multitude of different bosses to defeat in Skyrim, from the main antagonist of the game to more minor encounters. While dragons are often considered among the hardest enemies to take on, many players would instead argue that the hardest boss isn’t actually a dragon at all. Instead, it comes in the form of the Dragonborn Miraak.

Skyrim’s other notorious boss battles primarily come from the Dawnguard DLC, such as the ancient dwemer Forgemaster and the vampire Lord Harkon. The most well-known, though, is the battle against the dragon Alduin, who appears twice throughout the main storyline of Skyrim to fight against the player. Both battles rely on the strategic use of Dragon Shouts in order to take him down. Arguably, the use of these shouts is what also gives dragons an edge in Skyrim’s boss battles. Miraak also has the same abilities.

Miraak is introduced during Skyrim’s Dragonborn DLC, which doesn’t begin until players have reached level 10 and traveled to Solstheim through the Windhelm docks. It’s a relatively lengthy DLC, with a new primary questline to tackle as well as various secondary objectives, so it’s a good idea for Skyrim players to wait until level 30 to 50 before tackling it. This is especially true given the difficulty of battling Miraak in Skyrim.

How To Defeat Miraak, The Hardest Boss In Skyrim

As the first Dragonborn, Miraak is objectively considered a true equal to Skyrim’s protagonist in terms of power. His role as both a Dragonborn and a Dragon Priest not only gives him access to quite a few powerful Shouts, but also a significant supply of Magicka. Fortunately, the fight follows a fairly predictable pattern. Once Miraak’s health has been drained to a significant point – typically somewhere under 50% – he will teleport to another area on the map and drain the soul of a nearby dragon in order to cure his wounds. This process repeats several times, making Miraak’s boss fight one of the lengthier and more frustrating Skyrim battles to undertake.

There are quite a few tactics to utilize that make the process easier, though. Sticking close to Miraak is a good way to make things a little less challenging. He’s more dangerous in a ranged fight than a close combat battle, particularly considering his array of powerful spells, including electricity-based ones. Wearing armor that defends against Destruction magic is also a good idea. It’s also worth noting that the Dragonborn won’t be the one to deliver the final blow against Miraak. Instead, the Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora will appear to kill Miraak when there are no dragons left and his health is significantly low. This could be so that Miraak could continue to be viewed as the Dragonborn’s true equal in Skyrim. Either way, it preserves his narrative and mechanical place as the hardest boss in the game.
