Skyrim’s Most Underwhelming Quests

It feels at times that there are a nearly limitless number of quests to be found throughout Skyrim, ranging from radiant collection missions to major faction questlines or main story segments of the game. Some quests, however, are less well-developed than fans might hope for. Whether it be due to lacking in meaningful rewards and consequences, or significantly limiting player actions, here are a few of the most disappointing quests in Skyrim.

Most of the game’s more fleshed-out quests appear throughout the game’s various faction-related questlines or story segments. Skyrim’s Stormcloak and Imperial Civil War storyline, for example, is an overarching part of Skyrim and its progression involves multiple different major missions. Even less plot-essential questlines like that of the College of Winterhold contain quite a bit of content to play through, but that isn’t necessarily the case for all of Skyrim.

Fortunately, the size of the game’s modding community has enabled there to be quite a few major Skyrim mods out there that help to fix some of the more underwhelming quests in the game. Those who opt not to use Skyrim’s best mods, though, may instead simply want to prioritize their time to focus on the more beneficial and engaging missions instead.

Skyrim’s Lack Of Options In The Paarthurnax Dilemma

Skyrim’s Most Underwhelming Quests

Throughout Skyrim’s main questline, the Dragonborn can be assisted by several major NPCs, including the Greybeards and the Blades. Both of these groups offer unique quests and story content to the player – up until a certain point, that is. Later on in the questline, the Blades will refuse to help unless players agree to fight Paarthurnax as a boss, a genial dragon and the leader of the Greybeards. If the quest is ignored, the Blades will no longer communicate with the Dragonborn; and on the other hand, if it’s completed, the player will likewise be cut off from further communication with the Greybeards. There’s no real way to win, and the fact that the topic can’t even be discussed and Paarthurnax can’t properly be spared is a frequent source of irritation among Skyrim fans.

Finding The Stones Of Barenziah Across Skyrim

Skyrim’s Most Underwhelming Quests

Players are likely to encounter the widely disliked Stones of Barenziah quest by chance. The set consists of 24 gemstones that are found in key locations throughout Skyrim, meaning that the Dragonborn tends to stumble upon them while completing other assignments or simply while exploring the map. After finding one stone, players are instructed to take it to an appraiser in Riften, which will then open a pathway for the Crown of Barenziah to be re-assembled once all the gems are completed. The catch is that it’s one of the longer quest slogs in Skyrim, as there are no quest markers for any of the other stones in the vanilla game, making it unnecessarily difficult to locate the complete set. Arguably, the Crown’s benefits aren’t even worth all the work; while it does provide the Dragonborn with a unique ability, it can be a pain to track down and carry all the Stones of Barenziah until then.

The Bards College Is Skyrim’s Most Useless Faction

Historically, there’s been many different factions present throughout the Elder Scrolls games. The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild, for example, appear in most mainline titles. Fans of the series were excited when it appeared that Skyrim would be introducing a new faction to the franchise; the Bards College appears in Solitude, and players are able to join up after hearing other NPCs talk about enrolling. The questline itself, however, is woefully lacking in terms of meaningful and unique content. It primarily consists of the Dragonborn running errands through dungeons rather than participating in the traditionally bard-like behavior most fantasy RPG fans would think of. Perhaps The Elder Scrolls 6 could expand upon the context for a bardic questline, but as it stands, it’s one of the most disappointing threads in Skyrim.
