Smash Bros Ultimates Newest Stage Required Approval From All IP Holders

The creator of the Super Smash Bros franchise, Masahiro Sakurai, has confirmed that the ability to play every song on the newly-added Small Battlefield stage was not as easy of a task as some may have thought. Truth be told, Smash fans have been spoiled by the wealth of content that is present in the series’ latest iteration. Plenty of dream characters finally made their debut this time around, but the sheer number of stages, music tracks, unlockables, and collectables are surreal.

One of the biggest crossover additions to arrive last year was none other than the Microsoft-owned duo of Banjo and Kazooie, which fulfilled a long-held dream for many Nintendo fans. Others have been surprising as well, with Persona 5’s Joker acting as a perfect example of what sort of shocks gamers could expect from Smash Bros Ultimate’s DLC lineup. However, one of the most surprising additions came in the form of a free stage that arrived alongside the 8.1.0 update back in August 2020.

Nintendo dropped the stage called Small Battlefield seemingly out of nowhere, giving gamers a chance to try a different take on the classic Battlefield and Big Battlefield options that were already available in Ultimate. One of the coolest aspects of this decision was that every single song available in Smash Ultimate can be played while duking it out on this stage, but Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has since confirmed in his 611th column for Famitsu (translated via Event Hubs) that implementing this required every single intellectual property holder with music featured in the game to re-approve their respective deals because it wasn’t in their original agreements.

“As such, we’ve made it so that [Small Battlefield] won’t be inferior to the Battlefield and Final Destination options. You can pick from the game’s entire music library for Small Battlefield. That’s over 1,000 different songs. Getting permission from all the rights holders for something like this is a very big undertaking, but somehow we managed to make it a reality.”

Managing all of the companies collaborating on Smash Bros Ultimate is a surreal thing to accomplish. Setting aside all of the publishers that have characters on the roster, there are songs from even more outside sources like Undertale and Cuphead that have to grant approval for their songs to be made useable on Little Battlefield. At the end of the day, Sakurai and his team managed to get it done – all to the betterment of players.

Of course, it’s likely that the team also took the opportunity to future-proof Little Battlefield by getting additional companies to sign off on musical inclusions for the stage. That’s if there are even plans to include fighters from outside of Nintendo’s library in Smash Ultimate’s Fighters Pass 2. Although, at this point, it wouldn’t be surprising to see news on that front sooner rather than later as Smash fans have been without a newcomer since the arrival of Min Min from ARMS in June 2020.
